SPY PHOTOS: VW Passat R 36
Volkswagen is currently testing at Nürburgring the new sporty Passat version R 36. The photos are showing two prototypes of both sedan and wagon.

The car has larger air intakes in the front end, large alloy wheels (still painted black), and the rear end is featuring a small spoiler and two exhaust pipes.

Power for this R 36 comes from a V6 280 HP engine.

AWD or FWD? Because that sounds like a potent engine, but I am wondering if a FWD setup can handle that much power. Torque steer anyone?

And people still think Audi and VW are the same?

They just made it look pretty. Nothing special about the engine.

It's AWD and it will have more that 280hp as the current Passat 3.6 has 280hp.

AWD is a good thing, for that much power.

Looks great, really sporty and aggresive. Nice engine, you can already get this engine here. Europe so far only has the 250 hp 3.2 version.

That's a bit redundant. You'd be paying $4-6K extra for a bodykit and some special badges. I was expecting them to up the power.

Well, this engine better end up on the new A4. If they keep the current 3.2, which is a pretty boring engine, I'll be disappointed.

This car might not even come here in this exact configuration. As I said before Europe hasn't had this engine yet. The current Audi V6 3.2 (actually 3.1 liters) is a great engine. Makes just as much power and more torque than the BMW 3 liter inline 6.

Not any more. The 535i will be in a much higher rank, leaving the A6 3.2 in the lowly 528i class. It's just underpowered, and the car is too heavy for the engine.

Some magazine had it for a long-term test, and sait the 3.2 drove like an overweight Camry with an expensive paint job. Sadly, I agree. It's a truly boring engine. Bring back the 2.7T, and give it 290-310hp!!!

The VW engine and Audi engine are nothing alike. The VW has a 10.6 degree VR6 and the Audi has a 90 degree V6. I don't think you will see the VR6 in an Audi any time soon.

Funny, because the VR6 is already in the Q7.

Volkswagen, let's go and take over Toyota.

Get on it.

Just give me the Passat R GT with the 575hp from SEMA last year and then we will talk..this is just a tuned up version of the original, is there really a point.
What market segment is it suppost to compete in?

"VW is not known as a performance company, never has and most likely never will."

Hmm... I disagree. VW is known as the most enthusiast-friendly entry-level brand there is. Their cars have a distinctly sporty flair. Their prices are higher for a reason- their interiors are second to none, and they're better to drive than pretty much anything else at a low price point (as long as you don't bring up the Mazda MX-5).

Reliability is a big issue for VW and if they want to take on Toyota, they have to deal with it immediately. Hunt every VW forum and you will hear a lot more issues arising from engine/transmission problems that prevent the car from even being driven. Even if it's "only" 1 out of 10 cars with this problem, that's still too high.

True. What I'm sick of is that everyone thinks Audis have the same problems.

Audi is much higher up on the JD Power list. They're in front of most other luxury brands- I believe companies in front of it are Lexus and Acura.
