Yes, when you factor in the price, and what you get for that price.
I'd call the Smart the Stupidest buy!

I was going to vote for the Jeep Compass before reading this. What the hell, an imitation SUV called the "Compass" that doesn't even come with a compass. LOL! Generic Americans HATE wagons and this is the WORST wagon anyone could conceive. It's saving grace; not called a wagon, please.

I'd go as far as to blame anyone who would consider purchasing this vehicle for all the problems the US faces today. IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!

At least the Pontiak Aztek could hole a 30 rack between the seats in the storage compartment. This thing makes my Toyota Matrix look huge. Don't tap it or you may make them go flying off the road. I've never been a fan of them, and never will be.

The SM2 is just too tiny for America's roads. The Mini Cooper is about as small as you want to get for a car.

The Jeep Compass was Jeeps attempt to get into the more car-based SUV market. But being that the Compass is going to be discontinued very shortly they are realizing that Jeep is NOT for the car based. It didn't attract previous or current Jeep owners and barely go the attention of people looking at other cars. Jeep even went far to distance itself from the model stating it was NOT off road capable in anyway. They had it shoved down their throat by the Dodge people.

We need bigger cars to house these Big American Butts of ours. Our preference for larger vehicles has some practical aspects to it. Even Honda as acknowledge the Ever-Expanding Arse, and is making larger car seats, and interiors, to accommodate the market.

The Smart is not a very good fit for the US market.

There are worse cars out there. To many people this car would not make sense,but for someone starting a new life in a big city like manhattan where there are pot holes the size of baseball fields,no parking and traffic all day this little car begins to make sense.

I think the list is pretty dumb anyway. Ok, so some of the cars on that list aren't impressive but I wouldn't call them "the worst".

The mileage of the Smart isn't that great considering its size and power output but it is a great city car, it's roomy and it is fun to drive (was able to sample it) in its own way.

The Chrysler Sebring...well, my parents have one. Let's put it this way. If this car is owned and driven by older people, they'll most likely not have any problems with it. It's relatively comfortable and spacious upfront and it gets the job done. The way most older people drive shouldn't place any stress on the weak brakes and soft-sprung suspension. If a BMW driver drove it I can understand where the criticism might come from.

Oh God yes, you can mention all the complaints above and add the horrible CVT transmission which make the car worse on a quantum level.

Oh boy I needed a good laugh. That was great! If you live in a city and commute, wouldn't you walk, taxi, subway, bus, etc. I think many people would find it hard to find parking in cities, even for their scooters. Bikes can be brought upstairs to your office in most cases.

And as a side note (since this is a car site). Zipcar offers small cars (Mazda 3, Ford Focus, etc.) for people to basically rent for the day to drive out of the city (NYC) and they bring it back when their done. Kinda like cheap car rental for people in cities who need a car just for a day but don't wanna pay ridiculous rental fees from enterprise or hertz.

Smart Car Worst of 2000s? DEFINITELY...Factor in Performance (Sucks) and Value (Sucks) and it's an easy pick. Yes, it's got the smallest "footprint" but really, WHEN is a Honda Fit too big? You can have many excellent small cars for less than the price of a Smart...

I've driven my friend's ForTwo before, and it was the worst experience I've ever had in a modern automobile. The acceleration was anemic, the handling was clumsy, the ride was harsh, the squeaks from the interior panels were non-stopping, and the interior plastics looked and felt as if they were pulled from the toy factory. The only reason my friend bought it was because it was the only "Mercedes-Benz" he could afford at the time.

i like the smart. while the toyota iQ has better styling, it doesn't have the nifty rear engined design. these tiny cars are great for cities. starting at $12k..what a bargain.

Very true. Half the size of a Prius, practically half the mileage too.
Atleast it doubles as a casket so you do save some money there, as well insurance should be cheap as you'll never survive to make a claim.
