Automotive design is a completely subjective topic. And that's exactly why we love it. There are so many different ways to interpret a design and appreciate it.So when we look at the old-school classics from storied marques that are steeped in tradition — Porsche and Range Rover — we always like to really observe the details. How did "model 'X'" evolve from the original approximately 30 years ago? Where did the BIG changes take place? What do changes say about the brand's path to success, or in some cases, failure? That said, we're going to take a look at two icons:1) The Land Rover Range Rover.2) The Porsche 911.We want to know: WHICH of the two looks BETTER or WORSE than the ORIGINAL model it has evolved from?THEN and NOW: Auto Design Photo Gallery

New cars look contemporary and right for the times. Eight year old cars are old and out of place until they reach the next stage. Fifteen year old plus cars have a style, a patenia and nostalgia that warms the heart and mind to what once was.— PUGPROUD (View Profile)

Land Rovers have never looked good. The 911 looked good then and it still looks good now. — PLAY (View Profile)

The best design iteration of the RR was the Series 3, 2003-2012. The Series 4 had to evolve, I understand that, however I believe the S3 will be more popular down the road as a collector.911, the past 2 examples incorporated modern flair that makes their "more of the same" shape look cleaner and sharper - the 911's of the 90's were somewhat boring to me and I would have picked the original at that time.PUGPROUD makes a good point. A car that is 8-10 years old is outdated and undesirable. The short lived Series 2 RR will be more apealing to restore a few years into the life cycle of the Series 4.— M35MT (View Profile)

Agents, excellent photos! The 80s and the 90s were overall horrible for design, but it appears that we are in a renaissance period. Good design is timeless as demonstrated by the photos.— vdiv (View Profile)

If you compare these 2 cars original and now their newest iterations you have to come to the following conclusion. The original car's look better in my opinion. They came out during a time when safety regulations for bumpers front and rear where not in affect. The original cars detailing of the front and rear bumpers is far more detailed and intricate in the original cars than the new cars federally mandated bumper blobs due to requirements and Euro pedestrian impact laws. The front of the new 911 manages to more successfuly evoke the original model's look. The rear end does not but yet is still quite attractive(especially the new tail lamps). Looking at both cars from the rear the swollen rear fenders of the 991 do not acheive the delicate and clean design of the original. In fact I think the original in general has a simpler cleaner design then the new 991. As for the interior the 991 has gone for the "Corporate" sedan look borrowed from the Panamera. To me it doesn't really say exotic sportscar. The new dashboard architecture could be in any Euro German sedan. It has lost it's individuality.Aston Martin, Ferrari,Audi R8, Lamborghini, Lotus etc. have a much more bespoke architecture to their dashboards. The original 901 was also more bespoke and again a lot simplar in it's architecture with the 5 dial dash dominating. The new dash is more generic in design. As for the Range Rover the original was a lot more interesting with the sharp design edges, straight lines, and creases. The new one looks more like a Ford Flex. The new interior of the Range Rover is even more disapointing with lack of wood accents giving a more contemporary but again generic looking dashboard. It is more upscale then the simpler original. The original dash had a more rugged look to it.I like the original design the best on both these models.— mini22 (View Profile)

Can't make a judgement on better designs with such a time lapse between the two models being compared. What I can say is that it's interesting to see just how much the models have evolved since their originals. Would love to see more comparisons of models with iconic lineage/pasts such as:- Mercedes SL- BMW 3 Series- Jaguar XK- Audi A8- Toyota Land Cruiser- Nissan 370Z (I think was already done here)— cidflekken (View Profile)

Do some of you guys actually read back what you typed! wow! I have no real interest in rovers, but the 95-98 911 is one of the most desirable body designs porsche ever had. This is also the last of the air cooled porsches. So saying that the 80s and 90s car designs were bad (and I only showed one example) is just silly.— Codeus (View Profile)

In my humble the older designs are the icons. The newer designs exist simply because the older designs set the standard. Further, I like the smaller vehicles before the bloat set in. But, I certainly wouldn't turn down a new Porsche ; )— HighDesert (View Profile)
