First off, you can't just look at 2 random years in comparison to attempt to demonstrate a trend.

Second, this is an extremely old article, where do you guys come up with these things?????

Third, many of the claims have no evidence to back them up.

There are so many fourths, fifths and so on, I cant even take the time to point out the flaws.

Why do I even respond to this nonsense??????

This article is a summary of an article posted in a japanese business magazine. Many of the claims in the article are well known and documented by other news sources.

Try googling for them I'm sure you'll find many sources.

Here I googled and found this, one of many:

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/business/060711/b071142.html

And the statistics are from Japan's domestic Ministry of Transportation. This might be a questionable source but probably not.

And some of the other information are from people who work for toyota's parts suppliers.

This article is just a compendium of the things "not so rosy at toyota"

Believe them or not, Deceive yourself or not the choice is yours.

The original article in Japanese has a three-page insert in the article revealing for the first time the details of over 50 of the recalls based on research by Toyo Keizai. The list includes many design errors of software, parts configuration, raw material properties and a variety of surprising manufacturing errors from insufficient nut torque, missing fasteners, damage during assembly, and mis-assembly. I don't think this is what former Toyota Chairman Hiroshi Okuda meant last year when he said Toyota should give General Motors some breathing room.

More lies posted by German fanboys to make Toyota look bad. Don't even mention Toyota + Recall in one sentence, doesn't exist.

Also Lexus cars are outselling BMW and Benz in Japan and in many other Asian markets. Asian customers are capable of recognizing true quality products, unlike stupid Europeans (even though Lexus is doing very well in Europe).

Many companies are envious of Toyota's quality. Bentley and Rolls Royce benchmark the Toyota Corolla interior because it is so good and well made. If companies like Bentley and Rolls Royce benchmark a simple Toyota Corolla interior, imagine what would happen if they benchmark an ultra quality Lexus interior?

German fanboys are known to be mentally challenged and jealous. Just look at people like Benz W124 or Kalimba or Severobusyisback or enthusiastx or whatever.

German fanboys are mad that their cars are outclassed by Toyota and Lexus. I have said it before but Bentley should be ashamed off themselves because a simple base model Corolla has a better interior for example. Or the fact that Toyota's and Lexus are more safe than Volvo's. German fanboys just can't take the truth.

Europeans don't know a good car when they see one. If they did they would buy a Lexus but they don't really do that. Still Lexus is growing rapidly in Europe (like by 150%) so some Europeans are waking up. Probably the British and French and Italians since they hate the Germans.

When toyota made simple cars they were probably reliable. I mean what can go wrong with a anemic 4 cylinder car with power nothing and roll up windows. But now that they are making cars to compete on a world market which require many different features and options they can only market quality just ask:

Posted by: Mike Young - August 20, 2006 09:53 PM

I can attest to this. As a long time Toyota owner I am really suffering with my 2005 camry. It only get and go when it want to. Best of all this is normal when I call and describe this to customer service. Dealer said it is a problem but they have no fix.

OR

After owning 11 solid and reliable Toyotas over 20 years, my new 2005 Avalon had more transmission, throttle control, build quality and other issues than any car I had EVER owned. I got rid of it after only a few months. They sure don't make them like they used to. Toyota is now JUNK.

The scariest thing I found about the article is that there seems to be systemic problem within the toyota infrastructure which is greatly impacting the quality of their products. This is exemplified in the excerpt:

The lights on the Toyota Technical Center building are on past 10PM, even at midnight on some days. There is no second shift of engineers, they are simply putting in very long hours. Toyo Keizai interviewed some young workers from a Toyota supplier "If we stay on this path, quality problems will increase and so will the lawsuits" and "If they keep working people this hard, eventually no one will want to work here."

I think the growth of Toyota/Lexus has brought about some quality issues as well as other things. (I'm looking at you ES/Camry transmission bugs!)

With that said, they still have reigned supreme in the quality and reliability department for well over a decade.

Other brands such as Buick are catching up (and good for them!). But instead of chiding Lexus for having some quality slip-ups, why not bash on those other brands who have not seen the success Lexus has had in reliability studies.

An intelligent person would look to Lexus's past history of success, combined with their leadership position even with some problems, and predict that Lexus is more likely to correct any problems than become a bottom dweller on JD Power's list.

Speaking of reliability, BenzW124 is becoming a very reliable source of stupidity here at autospies.

make that at least 3 or 4 decades.

i KNOW, because my first new car was a '71 corona. toyota's rep for quality was not yet known then. my bill for FAILED parts was less than $25 in the first SEVEN YEARS. all other replacements were for just normal wear and tear items.

toyota developed their Lean Mfgr. system, which is what gave them the quality (at NO cost) advantage, way back in the 1950s and 1960s.

Most points are valid to a degree, except for that Hyundai BS.

Two points that stood out. More parts sharing means recalls are larger. Simple math to anyone with commonsense. Second, and this is from my friend in the industry, but Toyota is short on skilled labour, skilled meaning experienced in the industry.

The contract/temporary point is lame though. The Big 3 have permanent unionized labour and look how good their cars were. Only the threat of death has Buick measured up.

It's funny how it was an American who pioneered the good manufacturing culture in Japan. And now the Japanese have ruined this culture by being greedy..

>
Dr. W. Edwards Deming is known as the father of the Japanese post-war industrial revival and was regarded by many as the leading quality guru in the United States. He passed on in 1993.

Trained as a statistician, his expertise was used during World War II to assist the United States in its effort to improve the quality of war materials.

He was invited to Japan at the end of World War II by Japanese industrial leaders and engineers. They asked Dr. Deming how long it would take to shift the perception of the world from the existing paradigm that Japan produced cheap, shoddy imitations to one of producing innovative quality products.

I cant believe i just waded through 66 comments of nonsense. And everyone is missing the main points of contention that I brought up in the first entry.

1. This article is old. (Aug 06)

2. It is using very limited data to prove its point. (Comparing 2 specific years to get recall info)

3. Many of its points are based on no data at all, just hypothetical conjecture. (Lexus struggling in Japan)

And yet instead of a healthy discussion of the merits or lack thereof, we get 66 posts of david and benz trolling, and the rest of you feeding into it. Only one person responded to me, and I dont think you answered any of my criticisms, but thanks for the effort. Grow up, people!!!

The LS460 might sell well but:

A. it is a new model and B

B. Toyota is still of the mark for their sales targets for lexus in Japan.

here this is quited in the links you mentioned

"At the current 2007 year pace, with an average of 3,830 units a month, Lexus is on track in Japan to achieve around 45,960 units, which would be close to their goal for the 2007 year."

Either way their sales are not excellent above their target. This means sales are struggling to most analysts.

I agree the new FJ has poor quality relative to the old land cruiser.

http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/fj-cruiser/100590-suspension-problem-toyotas-response-help/

I recently had a problem while off-road in my '07 FJ. I've been offroading for 10+ years now and this is unacceptable. Here is the letter I wrote to TMS ... I think it is pretty self-explanatory!

To Whom It May Concern:

Let me start by letting you know that I am an avid off-roader and Jeep advocate. I currently own three off-road vehicles and have modified and drove half a dozen prior to my current fleet. I have been a trail guide for Jeep Jamboree USA and an active member of several off-road clubs both local and on-line. Prior to my Toyota, I owned a highly-modified 2-door Jeep Cherokee, but with a family on the way, I needed something a bit more practical. Toyota has drawn a lot of attention in the off-road community touting the FJ Cruiser as the “flagship” of Toyota off-road vehicles. Having been impressed with several Toyota models on the trails I have traveled, I decided to give the FJ Cruiser a closer look. I directly compared the 2007 TRD FJ Cruiser to the 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4DR Rubicon. The Toyota offered better quality and ride at a lower cost. I have always heard about “Toyota Quality” and my wife and I decided to purchase the 2007 TRD FJ Cruiser.

We drove to the local Toyota dealer, namely Serra Toyota of Farmington Hills, MI. Sales associate Nate Maciag greeted us and gave us the sales pitch and a test drive for a 2007 TRD FJ Cruiser. We ordered our vehicle the same evening. The vehicle delivery date was delayed three times by Toyota and arrived almost 30 days after the date we were initially promised. The vehicle also did not have the Tow Hitch that we had requested three times. I had to purchase the parts on-line and install them myself.

Within a month of acquiring the new FJ, we took several 9-hour road trips with our new family. We were immediately impressed with the fit and finish and astonished by the quality of the ride and comfort being an off-road vehicle. On May 19, 2007, I took the FJ to the Silver Lake ORV State Park in Michigan to test its off-road capabilities. It again amazed me with its ease of off-road drivability and comfort. That was until the last hour in the park. We decided to take one more run up Test Hill and I misjudged my speed at the peak of the dune. This resulted in the front end leaving the ground. The front end landed and we continued driving across several subsequent dunes to the ORV park exit. At the exit, I opened the driver door and heard the sound of metal contacting metal. Upon closer inspection I found that the front fender had been pushed back into the door. I inspected the front bumper and did not find any damage. Perplexed, I proceeded back to the house we were staying in Mears, MI. My friends and I started to inspect the vehicle more closely and found the cause of the damage. so overall, you're happy with the quality and ride of the toyota.

but you're UNhappy because it just happens to not be IDIOT-proof and CRASH-PROOF as well?

ok.

I must educate you in what makes an off road machine! First off the fj has very limited wheel travel! That is the major ingredient into building a capable 4x4, suspension flex! The H-3 out wheels the FJ and the Jeep Rubicon out wheels them all! The Toyota FJ has also had some major frame problems that will or is going be a major recall. Is this still quality? It's redeeming quality is the single selectable rear locker.Wait a minute what about the sticker package! Stickers won't get you over rough terain! It's all marketing and anyone that buys an FJ for four wheeling is an un informed sheep! I used to be a Toyota guy but not anymore so go ahead and deboost the truth!

You are right the land cruiser is a car, although it is a very refined car just not a capaple 4x4 like they used to be. On the topic of quality the new FJ is riddled with major problems like cracking frames...They are not intended for off road. And if you believe all the marketing you better educate yourself!

Toyota has a major frome problem on the Toyota FJ! Kpaxx was your frame cracked? I have jumped my 1993 four runner and bent the wimpy bump stops but never bent the frame.Your Fj has around 7-8 inches of pathetic wheel travel! My 1993 four runner came with factory 12in rear and a pathetic 7ish front wheel travel. As for The new tundra it doesn't carry enough weight or tow enough. You may as well get a full size.Toy doesn't make quality anymore! Marketing is geared towards the ignorant young! Numbers speak louder to me.Deboost the truth?
