This From a Luxury Diesel
For all those who feel they need upwards of 6.0 litres of displacement to get going that was a video of a 4.2 litre DIESEL Luxo Barge doing over 168 MPH on the Autobahn.
And this same vehicle when driven sensibly will return 40MPG on the Highway.
Take Heed ( So Called BIG 3 / 2.5 ) Technology has moved on up to the point were we can reliably get more than 60BHP per Litre.

I think V8 luxury diesels are kind of pointless. Diesels are meant for economy, and modern 6-cylinder diesels deliver the best of both worlds: power and fuel economy. The E320 CDI has proven that. I hope Audi and BMW follow suit for the US.

More power the better. Unfortunatel, the Bluetec isn't a 50 state engine. The new diesel regulations are really tough (I wander who paid the money to make them that tough)

More power is better, but this usually comes at the cost of fuel.

All I am saying is that an E320 CDI or 530d is an "adequate" vehicle. Once, in Europe, I drove around for a week in a 4-cylinder Benz E220 CDI, and I found it to be most adequate. It wasn't short on power and delivered excellent fuel economy. For the US though, a 6-cylinder would be better suited.

Those V8 diesels will be nose heavy too. This isn't a rant. ;)

250 kph = 155 mph.

That's still fast, but it's not 168 mph (270 kph.)

Audi's still playing by the 250 kph Gentleman's Agreement. Maybe AMG will take the bait and put out a 300 kph E55 Bluetec or something.

Were did you see 250??
the needle was past 260 on the gauge which had large numerals every 40kmph so i used 270 to do my calculations

(5/8) * 270 = 168.75 which is closer to 169.

Where can you drive 155 mph these days? When I travel to Europe on business, I also sometimes take time to visit relatives etc. and often rent cars. These are usually base models, and most often diesels, but damn they're fast! Some little 4-cylinder turbodiesel can scratch 140 mph! Amazing. But even achieving that speed is close to impossible with the amount of traffic on German highways these days, especially during the summers. Also, I was shocked to see "speed limits" on the Autobahn. It is a myth that the Autobahn is 100% free of speed limits. A lot of sections will have 130 kph speed limits, sometimes slower.

So why would someone need a car that can do 170 mph?

bmw530i, the word "autobahn" conjours up the wrong image. autobahn means (very rusty german) motorway, and there are not very many unrestricted sections.

and i beliuve no-one needs a car that can do even 100, but we buy them.
and going way back in this post, you said "diesels are meant for economy". so are hybrids, but that doesn't stop lexus having a new marketing tactic.
diesel engines have an efficiency of 30%, petrols 10%. the only reason diesels have less hp is because they can't rev highly, which is why nearly all are turbocharged.

Yes, but most people wrongly believe that the German Autobahn's are a fun-for-all when they aren't. There are speed limits, they're not straight and Germans are aggressive drivers.
