I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

Top Gear: Range Rover, H2 & Escalade off-road race
Clarkson put together a race to test the off-road capabilities of a Range Rover, a Hummer H2 and a Cadillac Escalade. Of course with his European bias, he drives the Range Rover while others drive the American made Hummer H2 and the Cadillac Escalade. Let’s see who wins. Read Article

They should have taken a Wrangler or a Grand Cherokee.

This was great TV but a totally ridiculous premise that since the Range Rover won the race its the best vehicle. The Escalade is not supposed to go rock climbing, and it seats 7 or 8 not 4 like the Range Rover. If you had raced the Range Rover against a cheap 4wd Jeep Wrangler then I expect the Jeep would have won, and for a fraction of the gauche Range Rover's price. . . but then that wouldn't have suited biased English TV.

That's because it really isn't built for true off-roading. And even putting bigger tires won't help. If you want to have a mud slinging party then the H2 is great.

The Range is unbeatable.

I'd like to see how it does against the grand cherokee before making that claim. I do admit that it is one of the most capable though.

The Range Rover is beatable, that is why it got beaten everywhere it counts (Africa, Asia, and Australia). Also the H2 is for serious off roading, but it is too big. I was wondering why the Grand Cherokee wasn't included oh its probably because it would have won???

The Range Rover is one of the most capable Off-Road vehicles together with the Land Cruiser.

I would like to see what the Hummer H1 could do on that hill.

And we know those GM SUV's are not really for that rough of terrain.

Jeep Wrangler, hands down. They should have included that, or at least as many as you guy have said, the Grand Cherokee, Hell, A CJ-7 is better off road than anything Rover has ever built.

I read in MPH, a comparison of RR Sport and the Jeep SRT8. The SRT8 seriously handed the RR Sport its lunch.

Why did the H2 just stop? Probably because the H2 driver was almost at the top and Clarkson wasn't. Clarkson didn't want to get beat, so Top Gear pulls an excuse out of its a** (altitude sickness??) and tells the H2 driver to just stop. Come on Clarkson, if your going to have to lie, then at least come up with something believable. lol

That is fishy. From all of the reviews and comparison tests I have seen the Hummer vehicles are always at the top of the list for off road ability - even though they are underpowered considering their weight.

Well the Land Cruiser wasn't included because, well it would have beaten the Range Rover been doing it since it came out.

That was total B.S. it looked like they were trying to make the Rover look good. The Range Rover is a very capable vehicle but Clarkson has a very biased toward british vehicles and against american cars. That terrain is easily handled by the H2. thats probably why they stopped the Hummer 3/4 of the way up so the Range could catch up.

There was no set route, the drivers of the H2 and Escalade had no credibility, and the H2 had running boards! BTW 22 inch rims do not help you off roading and add the fact the escalade doesn't even have a transfer case. This test was completly biased along with everything else Clarkson tests.

Hes a great host/comedian but not a great journalist.

BTW..check out the range rover sport verse a tank, its a great one!

The weight of the Range Rover and the Escalade isn't that much, yet he tries to be so vague about the weight of the Escalade making it sound ginormous, as if it's hard for people to find out their curb weights.

The two american SUVs were designed for ON Road use primarily and by the way also have four wheel drive. Whereas the Range Rover had its beginnings as a 4 x 4 vehicle that was made more luxurious. It has its share of reliability problems but Clarkson is always biased towards European cars. I'm also betting they all used street tires.

Is everyone fricken idiots!?! HUMMER H1s and H2s are not meant to go up mountains. There are built to go through extremely rouph terrain, like marshes and swamps. The claim to faim for the H1 was that it could go through water at headlight level. Learn your stuff people.

First of all this is the most biased piece of automotive journalism i've ever seen (besides car and driver, oh and...) but it was funny as hell..and for you idiots asking why didn't he use a jeep Cherokee or wrangler its simple...its for people who are willing to spend on these vehicles and not a wrangler...saying that then why didn't he take up a landrover defender? cos as much as you all go on about the cherokee and what not the preferred choice of off roading vehicle most places in the world is a defender..You don't watch national geographic and see the wilds of asia of africa with jeeps in it do ya..
Its light hearted humor people, and thats the basis of top gear at times, and Clarkson makes no attempt to hide his biased side..(unlike a few american car shows)..so get with it man...which would u prefer if you could afford it? an escalade, a H2 or a range vs a jeep??
