Top Ten Sedans for Under $45k

2008 Mercedes-Benz C-ClassThe entry-level sedan category is one of the most critical and fought after segments in the automotive marketplace today. Every major automaker, from Acura to Volvo, has at least one sedan in their line-up that embodies the brand’s je ne sais quoi at a price that is easier on the pocketbook than the top end models consumers may lust after.

Take the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which draws a direct linage from the “Baby Benz” 190 models of the past. The C-Class takes everyman luxury into new directions and provides a classically styled automobile at a price that most everyone can afford.

41K FOR A C CLASS? and that's just the C300, Talk about over priced. The IS250 is also overpriced.

Im assuming they estimated price assuming the vehicles were fully equipped. A C300 with every single option will run for that much or maybe more.

That's with nothing. That gives you an ugly nav-free center stack, fake "aluminum" trim that is quite obviously plastic, and none of the features that make Lexus cars luxurious.

well one the base prices are wrong, none of these cars start out that high im sure. the 328i starts at 33,000/ and the tsx doesn't start anywhere near the 36,000 they have on here thats how much a tl costs the tsx starts in the high 20's if im not mistaken. so these prices with options not base prices

I thought the Subaru for $40K was ridiculous when comparing all the other vehicles to it.

@ronnsscooby - No one's knocking the Legacy GT. But FORTY GRAND? Even at $35K it's more than the 328i's base price. And as good as anyone thinks the Subaru might be, I defy anyone to drive a 3 series back to back with it. Even a 10 year old 3 series.

im actually one of those people that prefer to buy a "bare" bones versions of any particular model as my username infers. then again, i still have that racer mindset and dont like added unnecessary weight. nor do i like or ever use a sunroof which doesnt even look good in most cases except the glassroof like on mercedes or porsche.

If you like bare bones with racer speed you should lok at the legacy gt spec b 0-60 in 5.1 sec and 1/4 mile in 13.2 in its raw version it is still faster than anything else in this comparo.

For that kind of money, you can buy a Subaru WRX STI or a Mitsu EVO, blow the legacy away, and still look like a putz who paid too much for his car, all at the same time.

first of all the sti will not blow away the legacy spec B . Second of all the legacy is way more refined than the sti. oh did I mention the legacy spec B has the exact same drivetrain and engine as the sti, exept it runs at 10 Lbs boost instead of 18 Lbs like the sti. It has navigation 18" wheels sweade interior ,heated seats, 6 disc changer ,momo shifter & steering wheel, and the same suspension and brakes as the sti. Know what your talking about before you come at me.

evidentally you have no idea what your talking about because even sti drivers wil admit that the two cars are not that far apart

Any article that lists over a dozen cars and can't find one criticism to offer for any of them isn't doing a bit of journalism. They are merely listing all the sedans in this price range from the list of manufacturers they consider "luxury".

Big deal. One must look at the lifetime ownership costs, not the price tag.

This article is comparing what you get for the money. Its not compiling all the b&%$SH*&t. By the way who owns a car for life anymore. So moto what do you drive a hyndai is that why your upset.

ronsscooby, since you asked, here are the cars that have been in our garage over the years:

- Pontiac LeMans - great project car
- Chevy Citation X-11 - tough car, great value, cheap plastic interior
- Buick Lesabre, Riviera - both comfy cruisers with zero problems
- Honda Accord - reliable if you forgive its many little idiosyncracies
- Chevy Corvette - not problem-free, but excellent bang for the buck
- Audi A4 Avant - expensive, but probably the most satisfying to drive on a daily basis
- GMC half-ton pickup, full-size Blazer, and Jimmy -- all good work vehicles.
- Toyota Highlander, Tacoma -- good overall, certainly no more perfect than the GMCs
- Mazda Miata - probably the most fun sub-$20k car i've ever driven
- Chevy Tahoe - our current towing vehicle. Solid, well-built, but painfully expensive to fill with gasoline
- various bikes, most of which are more fun to drive and tinker with than cars.

I don't think the TSX should be included. Maybe the TL (in the states) but not the TSX. The TSX is not a especially refined auto, certainly not in the league of the other 9. I got one as a loaner and was really disappointed.

The TL is possibly the biggest bargain in the segment. Yesterday, I saw a used '07 TL with a KBB value of $600 more than a brand new one! The reason is, Acura puts so much standard equipment in the car that when it becomes used, those extras (which are standard) add to the value of the car. How many others in this class can say that. Also, Acuras retain their value longer than any other company, percentage-wise. I believe there was a story on this site that would attest to that.
