Toyota Cars To Get Real-Time Traffic Data to Map Smartest Routes

New Toyota cars will have up-to-date map and traffic information for electronically determining the quickest routes in an upgrade of network-linking technology now offered mostly in luxury models.



The service, scheduled for rollout next month only for Japan, includes "map on demand," which constantly updates data about the nation's roads in navigation equipment through a mobile download, Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday.

The service, an upgrade of the G-Book services that Toyota started five years ago, will be offered in all new models.

Wow! I remember when Toyota released worlds first "Map on demand" feature. Now this is going to be a standard for all new Toyota models in Japan, along with G-Book! I 'm impressed.

Your Acura doesn't have anything on a Lexus GS350 not even power much,less technology!!!
Toyota does not copy any else any more but Lexus,they always release the technology out for Lexus first,then wait a few years or months to release it for Toyota..

Acura sucks they don't even offer a V8 flaship vehicle!!

Honda by its very nature, takes a lot of innovative chances, everything from Vtech to Hybrids, from ground breaking cars like the NSX to its new variable blade turbo engine ( i think its the 2.4L turbo in the rdx) or even its diesel engine that curbs emissions without using urea. But they do way too many one offs ( e.g. NSX was a ground beater for its day but it has languished way too long)

However Toyota, generally is the cost leader here. When they commit to a technology they commit 100%. They drive down the price for the end comsumer to aquire that piece of technology.More importantly they develop that technology to its maximum so that the end consumer has a seamless transition to it. Good example is vvt-i or Hybrids or Direct Injection ( Toyota has it on a lot of cheaper model cars)
The above is not to say that Toyota is not innovative, one has to only look at the LS460 to work that out. Its just that they tend to do less one offs then almost any manufacturer.
Frankly, I think they have the best manufacturing system and technology out there.

You are on to something. The Toyota philosophy basically is to focus on a proven technology and redefine it and drive the cost down. Not that they aren't capable by any means, but they choose to focus on existing technologies and perfect them.

Honda has done the same with its Navigation systems. It's availible in the Civic now. Navi used to be a $2500 premium now it only costs about $1500 in the Civic.

aznstuart,Toyota has offer navigation in the Corolla in Japan for a few years now,I don't know why they don't offer it in the united states,but the civic is not the first econo car to offer navigation!!
