Toyota Plans Domination In China Inspite Of Unfavourable View
Japanese companies operating in China have traditionally been disliked when compared with companies from Europe, the US and the rest of Asia. This couldn’t be more evident than in the Chinese auto industry, where until now Volkswagen and General Motors have been the most popular foreign makes.

Studies have found that close to 70 percent of Chinese people express an unfavourable view towards Japan, largely due to military conflicts between the two nations in the past. Considering the cultural divide that Toyota is facing in China, we’re quite impressed by the carmaker’s latest performance and it just goes to show how formidable Toyota really is. The company has since doubled its sales in China for the first nine months of this year compared with last year and is outpacing its rivals, including VW and Ford, thanks to the introduction of new models.

Toyota has managed to move 203,000 vehicles this year, outperforming even Ford’s amazing 105.5 percent growth rate. The increase in sales Toyota is enjoying is mainly due in part to the introduction of its Chinese-built Camry sedan, and if growth continues at this rate, Toyota could be number one in China by as early as 2008. Currently GM is at the top spot with 453,832 vehicles sold in the first half of 2006. The car pictured above is the new model Camry that’s sold in parts of Asia and will be called Aurion in other markets

I think it takes some time to close a 2 million car gap you know. Toyota will sell about 9 million this year while GM will have 9.5 million. Toyota will number in either 2007 or 2008.

In 2004 Toyota had about 7 million sales.

Also it's not a bad thing to be number 2 for 3 years and make $10 billion in profits.

They will be king soon.

Would anyone care if they did?

A few sad people on this site, obviously, and probably Toyota themselves.

And Audi is #1 premium brand in China!

Go Audi!

With the assistance of the rapidly growing Chinese market, they have a chance at being #1 (in the world). Mercedes-Benz and BMW are neck-and-neck, with Audi following closely in first place. Soon, I'm sure they'll all be competing for the top spot.

I don't see how Toyota can be as successful as they want to be in China. It's a crucial market, but of course, the Chinese hate the Japanese. Toyotas are perfectly adequate cars, but the Chinese won't accept them for what they are.

This is a bit like human racial discrimination.

But now that I think of it, they're pretty well off with VWs, anyway.

You nailed it. People hang on to their grudges, but not forever. The Japanese were hated by Americans, understandably, after Pearl Harbor. Fast foward 20 years and most VFW WWII vets are driving just about any Japanese car built! Its a combination of time passing and a feeling of betrayal a lot of people experience when they have been loyal to a brand and that brand lets them down. They get pissed and jump ship.

Very true. I live in a predominately Jewish town and a large fraction of the population drive Mercedes's, Porsches, Audis and BMWs.

And then the other parts drive Lexuses, Jaguars, a few Astons, the Quattroporte crowd, ubiquitous Range Rovers, Infinitis, Acuras, Saabs and Volvos.

The hatred of Americans against Japanese was "sneak attack and a war". And, American did nuked them. So in a way, both are even.

Japanese never occupied 2/3 of American soils and slaughtered 200+K innocent American civilians with their Samurai knifes like a game/competition among soldiers. Well, they did all that to the Chinese people back in WWII when China was poor and weak.

The common belief in China is that Japan IS their No.1 enemy. Someday, a war is inevitable in the future between the two countrys. And, when it happens, China plan to win this time...

Believe me when I say this...
No Japanese brand would not be #1 selling brand in China. Not in this generation. Maybe after 2030.

Because Mercedes-Benz and VW were both associated with the Nazis, as well as BMW and Porsche, but MB and VW mostly. And people associate those qualities with the cars for some strange reason. If the cars are fabulous, buy them!

Germans have changed!

There's always a chance that I'm Jewish, and I do drive a German car... but I'm not in the mood to enclose that information.
