Toyota Supra HV-R: the future of hybrids?
Many motorists chuckle smugly after giving their cars a little extra gas to leave a Toyota Prius or some other eco-friendly automobile in the dust. But Toyota and its Earth-loving ilk may yet have the last laugh as they cultivate encouraging new advances in ultracapacitor technology that promise to one day put hybrids in the driver's seat.

The greatest victory so far for the cars, fueled by a combo of electricity and gas, came just weeks ago when an ultracapacitor-equipped Toyota Supra HV-R coupe became the first hybrid to win the 24-hour endurance car race held at Japan's Tokachi International Speedway. The hybrid Supra finished 616 laps of the 5.1-kilometer (roughly threemile) course—19 more laps than the second-place nonhybrid Nissan Fairlady Z. "The Toyota that won was able to deliver energy more quickly, accelerate faster, and use braking generation more efficiently," says Kevin Mak, an analyst with research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics and author of a recent study that explores the potential for ultracapacitors to complement and possibly even replace batteries in hybrid vehicles. "The days of the large hybrid vehicle battery pack may be numbered," he adds.

The reason, he says: capacitor technology that stores energy in the electric field between a pair of closely spaced conductors. An ultracapacitor, also called a supercapacitor, is an electrochemical capacitor with a higher energy density than normal capacitors, which potentially makes them a better fit for hybrid vehicles.

Ultracapacitors store electricity by physically separating positive and negative charges. Batteries store energy using toxic chemicals and their effectiveness fades over time. In addition, recycling the heavy metals in batteries is a difficult task. Capacitors, on the other hand, are constructed of much smaller fine carbon nanotubes, Mak says.

A major advantage of ultracapacitors is their ability to efficiently capture electricity from regenerative braking systems and provide that electricity to power a car's acceleration. Ultracapacitors not only charge more quickly than batteries, they also release energy more quickly, Mak says.

Next generation Toyota/Lexus high performance hybrid system will be combination of both, high power quick charging/discharging long-life ultracapacitor and high energy density Li-ion battery.

Show-cases: FT-HS, LF-A-H

benzw124...

did you even see the cars that were entered into the race itself...let me give you a list of some well-known manufacturers that you say Toyota is inferior too

Porsche 996 GT3-RS
Porsche 997 GT3-Cup
(3)Porsche 911 GT3
BMW Z4 M-Coupe
(2) BMW M3

not to mention your list of varied Fairlady Z's, Evolution's, Integra DC5's

the Supra itself is probably deserving to be higher rancked with a 19-lap lead. les pit stops, etc does give it a disadvanatge but it did meet the rules for the endurance race...hence the humiliating defeat

If it dosent add to much weight and spoil the handling on the street versions i cant see any reason not to use this technology.

Well, I'll start.

• R10 has won more races

• Diesel is better-suited to racing

And to the comments about Toyota not having any racing heritage. Well maybe they havent won the Le mans or F1 championship, but they have won about everything else out there. If not as a factory team, then as a engine supplier or whatever. Honda won the F1 champion ship seveal times, why shouldent toyota ? Its just a matter of time, cause they aint running out of $$ anytime soon. Dont be ignorant and think that japanese manufactors dosent have racing heritage. F1 & Le mans isent everything , allthough i really love le mans :)

Really?

How about Paris-Dakar? London-Sydney? Carrera Panamericana? DTM? Formula One? Brooklands? Spa? Le Mans?

Toyota has hardly participated in some of the world's most renowned races. And if they did, they've hardly won a championship where it counts.

Nobody cares about those small Asian races where Toyota participates. There's virtually no serious competition there. When I lived in Thailand there was something called the "Super GT Cup" south of Phuket and it was basically modified Corolla's against modified Honda's. Toyota sponsored this event too. Nothing spectacular. "True racing heritage" in your eyes, though.

Bill has no clue. Toyota basically invented motor racing. No other company has more experience in motorsport than Toyota. Porsche even asked Toyota for help when it came to suspension tuning for the Cayenne because the Landcruiser is also a capable track car.

toyota has OWNED off road racing for some 20 years. since BEFORE they even had v8 trucks.

toyota chased and often beat honda in CART and IRL, despite having a much later start. (no EURO engines were competitive for long in those series, btw.)

even when forced to revert to old tech pushrods and carburetors, toyota not only caught up, but generated more power in the Craftsman NASCAR trucks.

given the time they actually SPENT competing and the results obtained, toyota shows up all other brands.

heritage, schmeritage. who else has done SO MUCH in SO SHORT a time span?

foxy,
Perhaps they should measure the carbon content of each fuel and put a limit.

Everyone always forgets that getting 30% more mileage is only impressive when you burn less, not MORE fuel. Remember that magic 30% number that no one to this day has been able to refute?
