Trademarks reveal possible new Cadillac naming scheme
If you liked alphabet soup as a kid, make an appointment at your Cadillac dealer for three to five years from now. That's because GM has recently trademarked several new nameplates for Cadillac, and so far we're worried and a bit confused.

At present, these names are trademarked in Europe and Canada. However, companies often register their trademarks in foreign markets first, and later in the United States.

This potential new naming system is undoubtedly complicated, but we will try and lay it out in the simplest way possible. So far, GM has trademarked:

DT7
CT6
CT5
BT3
AT1
DTX
CTX
BTX
We suspect the numbers in each name signifies each vehicle's overall size.

The "DT7" might be the eventual DTS replacement, for example. This large, luxury sedan may end up riding on the Zeta chassis in a few years time.

The CT6 and CT5 would be some kind of variants of the car we currently know as the CTS. One possibility is the numbers indicate two possible wheelbase lengths. On the other hand, we can't rule out the "5" and "6" being the current CTS sedan and forthcoming CTS coupe.

The BT3 could represent the next-generation BLS. This vehicle would probably be on the Epsilon II chassis, however, with GM's plans on the new Alpha chassis being unclear, there is always a possibility BT3 could be an Alpha car.

The AT1 is still a bit of a mystery. That said, it's a safe bet that this would be a small car that is definitely based on the Alpha chassis GM is currently developing. Could it be a competitor to the BMW 1-Series?

The "X" cars will more than likely denote crossover or wagon vehicles. However we'd also leave open the option that the "X" indicates all-wheel-drive models.

If the crossover assumption is true, the DTX is probably the vehicle currently known as the BRX. The CTX could be the forthcoming CTS wagon, and the BTX remains a mystery.

Of course, the all-wheel-drive option is also a strong possibility. The CTX could be an AWD CT6 or CT5, while the DTX would be an AWD DT7, and so on.

Obviously there is one glaring part of Cadillac's lineup not mentioned here — the Escalades. Some might suggest that the "X" vehicles we just talked about are in fact the trucks. However, given what our sources say, we don't think that's the case.

I've long been 'put-off' by the fact that Cadillac continues this Euro-WannaBee Alpha-Numeric naming nonsense.

Cadillac has a fine history, filled with great automobile names that they could/should be using.

Why was it necessary to rename the following:

Seville to STS (which stands for Seville Touring Sedan)

DeVille to DTS (which stands for DeVille Touring Sedan)

Catera to CTS (which stands for Catera Touring Sedan)

I feel they should simply go back to giving their vehicles Real Names.

GM should learn quickly that it is good to make it easy for customers to do business. Therefore, to avoid confusion, they should trademark "Zeta" and then name all vehicles built on the Zeta platform as Zeta 1, Zeta 2, Zeta 3 etc. etc. That way, there will also be full disclosure about platform sharing. I would demonize any marketing guy who does not believe in full disclosure.

I totally agree with the stupid naming trend.

Cadillac, Acura, etc. need to go back to giving cars names. (Changing 'Legend' to 'RL' seems to have created a sales curse for Acura's flagship)

Everybody is already using the alpha-numeric crap. Give it up!

What's in a name? To be honest with you, this isn't a huge change. When they went to letters only, now there's a change. Swapping some letters for numbers, most people won't even realize, and if they do they're not going to care. Just more money wasted on image/advertising that should have gone into making a good car into a great car.

What's In a Name?

It lends a vehicle a recognizable identity, to which the consumer can truly relate... that's what's in a name.

Alpha-numeric designators such as these do little more than strip (many) vehicles of the same... Especially for a company without a history of using them such as Cadillac.

All it comes across as is a 'Me Too (Just Like The Euro Brands)' Lack Of Effort.

There's a timelessness to wonderful Cadillac names like Eldorado, Seville, DeVille etc. and even more important... There's Heritage!

I agree, they keep on changing names without building any brand identity. Cancel the Ford Taurus, bring out the 500, rename the 500 and call it a Taurus again and call it all new?? The dodge Avenger? Why couldn't they just call it the dodge Stratus which atleast had more years running. Cavalier to Cobalt, Lumina back to Impala?

Honda Nissan and Toyota have used the Accord, Civic, Sentra, Maxima, Camry, and Corolla names for probably two decades straight and look how well they're doing, as their cars have built identity.

The numbers are targeting BMW class... notice 7, 5, 6 is a coupe, 3, 1 is small. X is crossovers

Something tells me these are just "internal" development names, not the actual model names. I can't imagine Cadillac coming out with a new luxury sports sedan called the BT3. It sounds like some sort of computer processor.

While they're trademarking 3-letter names, why don't they go after "POS". Wait, Lincoln probably already claimed it.

Nobody should be allowed to trademark common words or abbreviations used in everyday or business language. For example, POS refers to Point of Sale in the retail industry (see sold2early's comment above).
