Early this afternoon we heard initial reports that former Formula One champion, Michael Schumacher, had experienced a serious accident skiing in the French Alps at a high-end resort known as Meribel.

From the start it didn't sound too good as rescuers had a helicopter lift him out of the area. Although reports initially said that Schumacher had been conscious, but worried, the latest information coming to us from abroad is that Schumacher was in a coma upon arrival and has undergone brain surgery.

Though details of Schumacher's case haven't been revealed, typically that type of surgery is done to relieve pressure from an individual's brain swelling.

Schumacher is still in critical condition.

More updates are to be provided tomorrow.
