VW Follows Toyota's Lead and Recalls 62,000 Passats

Volkswagen of America, Inc.

announced safety recalls to address two issues in some 2006 and 2007 model year Passat sedans, and in some 2007 model year Passat wagons.

Some of the affected 2006 model year Passat vehicles have a wiper motor that may fail during heavy rain due to excessive moisture entering the wiper motor. If this happens, reduced visibility could result.

Also, some 2.0T engine-equipped 2006 and 2007 Passat sedans and some 2007 Passat wagons may have a power brake vacuum line that may fracture and become disconnected at low ambient temperatures. If this happens, the brake power assist can become inoperative, and the driver will experience increased effort to apply the brake and therefore possible increased vehicle stopping distance.

Approximately 62,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada could be potentially affected.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive a letter from Volkswagen of America, Inc. with instructions to contact their authorized dealer for an inspection and repairs if necessary. Customer notification is expected to begin in January of 2007.

Hmm on a percentage basis I don't know - 60,000 VAG products on this recall, isn't that the equivalent of a full year's sales for VW and Audi in the US?

Audi is going to sell about 100,000 cars in the US this year (a bit less), and VW will sell over 200,000. Not gargantuan amounts- but that's what makes VW different.

Discomfort? I think its more than a discomfort. That's like letting a blind man drive.
Window wipers may not work at all during a heaving rainstorm and a brake line may come loose. Now thats a real hazard.

Where is all the German auto fan now, ah...ha..ha...ha..ha..Yeah a faulty window wipers during a heavy can get your a$$ in accident. Every auto company has problem, including the once thought invincible German car. I guess their cars have problem and right as wells. The model is 2006 and 2007 models what the heck. I rather have my check engine light on then having my vaccum line become disconnected at low ambient temperatures and not having my wiper working when its raining and snowing......Ouch! Now that what u called unreliable.

A Good Driver will not be troubled one bit by a broken windshield wiper while on the Freeway, The EFFING speed you are traveling at should dispel most of the water that you would have enough visibility to safely switch lanes till you get to the Hard Shoulder.

Thats the problem with you people, you are all SHITE Drivers with almost Zero Driving Abilities and yet you boldly call Good Drivers Stupid for stating what Good Drivers should be able to Safely Handle.

This is more of a Discomfort Issue than a Safety Issue

Even if you were so RETARDED that you could not get over to the Hard Shoulder of the Freeway then Simply Switch on your Hazard lights and Rear Fog Lights and Slow down to a complete halt as close to the Centre Divider as possible till there is a LULL in the DownPour and the other drivers WITH GOOD WIPERS should be able to continue their journey around you with minimal trouble to them,
OH I FORGOT: The other Retarded drivers do not know how to look further ahead while driving in heavy downpours or nighttime so will probably just Plough into the Rear of your Vehicle with their 3.5Ton SUV that was on Cruise Control.

Learn to drive before trying to ridicule other People.

I love Lexus cars (eventhough I would never be shopping for one) but I have to say the Lexus ES is NOT attractive. It just reminds me of a Toyota Camry. Going to get a Lexus?, get an IS/GS/RX. These cars are sweet.

Possibly losing visibility during heavy rain and not getting your full brakes.

I'd have to say Toyota's bad lightbult recall just isn't on the same level of severity.

The theory of using recalls to fish for customers is an interesting conspiracy idea though.

LOL No no no!!I'm a technician for Toyota and Almost no recalls cause a Check engine light,so don't even go there if you don't know,I think some of Toyota's recall are so stupid,like the Highlander center carpet clip replacement,,also the child safety lock botton is too long so we have to trim them down,and the Sienna tape recall that goes inside the lower part of the door panel!The only thing that can cause a DTC is an engine manegement malfunction,Evap leak or malfunction,or transmission mulfunction,which Toyota does not have,Toyota only has Body and suspension recalls.

Yep European luxury cars are built to be taxis and are often sold stripped - you know AM radios, cloth or vinyl seats, wind-up windows, etc.

However Japanese luxury cars are engineered to have AC, complex electrical systems, high end radios and other options; and to go more slowly.

And of course US cars are developed to have popcorn makers, fridge-freezers, microwaves, projector TVs etc.

When customers order high spec vehicles from Audi the customers are asking Audi to do something they don't do in Europe - namely provide a car with a lot of options.

The Japanese had concentration camps as well. They didn't gas their prisoners, but they mistreated them, beat them, starved them, used them for medical experiments and also shot them for no reason. Germany and Japan both fall into the same category when it comes to violence during WW2.

Bill your wifes relatives are just ignorant people that still live in their past. My family and living relatives went through a lot more hell then what your wifes relatives went through and they was able to forget about the past too. Going through generation after genenration getting killed by Hans, Japaneses, Frenchs, Vietnameses, and Laotians. One century of torture. watisthat, did you know in China during WWII approximately 10,000,000 Chinese died and 7 million were civilians and 3 million Chinese military?

Japan lost approx. 2,600,000 with 2 million millitary and 600 thousand civilian deaths.

Germany had 7,500,000 deaths and 5.5 million were military and 1.8 million civilians died.

America lost 418,500 with 11 thousand civilian deaths and the United Kingdom had 450,400 deaths with 68 thousand civilians killed.

The Soviets lost 23,200,000 people and 11,500,000 civilians died pretty much because the Government just let them starve and they died from common illnesses.

BTW, Lexus should recall the brand new LS460 for HORRIBLE brakes. It needs 209 feet to brake from 70 miles per hour. Most new cars take 30-40 feet less. Now that is a real danger to the general public.

Not sure, but in the Car and Driver luxury sedan comparison, the Lexus LS460 had the WORST braking, in fact it was 27 feet worse than the group average. Now that is a real safety issue. Pickups get better braking distances. The Lexus LS 460 has many safety features, but when the push comes to shove, the Lexus LS 460 has most likely the WORST braking distance of any passanger car on the road today. What about that Lexus fans?

chewy, I just read C&D and youre right about the LS460 taking a lot of road to stop and we all know we have to stop or we could drive off the side of a mountain and smash into the rocks and tear the car into little bitty pieces.

The Lexus also has a small trunk or boot for the Brits.

You see I'm a real estate agent and I need a trunk that will hold at least 20 signs for when I'm doing an open house.

It's really good that Both VW and Toyota are fixing the problems. I just don't see how anyone can compare failing windshield wiper motors and fracturing brake lines with a check engine light...

this is good point EVERYONE should become aware of. ever since nations evolved, armies were made up of PEASANTS from some district drafted and made to fight other PEASANTS from elsewhere.
later, it was farmers' kids, factory workers, laborers, etc.

all these OEDINARY people were coerced or brainwashed to fight and kill OTHER ordinary people. for whose benefit?

vain, selfish, GREEDY LEADERS seeking to expand the lands they controlled. to exploit the resources, get more CHEAP workers and peasants to draft into imperial armies, and also more CONSUMERS of 'mother' countries factories.

any soldier fighting in a FOREIGN land, is ALWAYS an INVADER. he may have been brainwashed into THINKING he's fighting for "freedon and democracy." but it does not change the fact he is an INVADER, fighting "insurgents" trying to EVICT invaders.

Here's another roadtest, the new LS460 matches the S550 in braking with the standard brakes, not the larger touring package ones, as well it's 0-60 time is 5.8sec.
Of course, it doesn't have that magic feel apparently. Maybe there should be a recall on that.

Read careufully and the poor braking was a result of using tires geared towards comfort, not the optional sporty ones. (top of the 2nd page incase you're too lazy to look)

No, Car and Driver got two bad results, 207 feet and 209 feet. I am sure about 90% of LS460s will be equipped with the lame regular tires. This doesn't excuse the atrocious braking, very dangerous.

You're just looking for something to complain about. Using the same tires on the same test twice will net you the same result when they've identified the cause is the tires, not the brakes. The point about the Lexus matching the S550 doesn't count because it goes against your feeble argument?

Did you all of a sudden forget about the most dangerous recall in the history of automobiles, the dreaded "engine light" recall?

Atleast Lexus drivers won't have to wonder if they'll have brakes at the next red light or not. Of course, since it's German, no problem, well worth it.

Oh, btw, go look at the C&D review of the LS etc, they tested every car 5 times on braking, except for the LS and 750, and on the 750's datasheet, they scratched out 209 and replaced it with the 176ft. The LS's is actually 207ft.

So where were the two tests you were referring to Chewy, or did you just make it up?

So what's the deal with VW and Mercedes making cars with brakes that may or may not work? I know it's not as important as having a good engine light (because Germans crap themselves when one of those things come on), but I thought I'd ask it anyway.

I noticed that the Jag has the best braking, being 700lbs lighter helps. The Audi has good brakes, no questions there. But the S550 had underinflated tires, and the BMW had underinflated front ones. I don't want to point fingers, but yeah, that's what I'm doing.

What are you talking about, in the January 2007 issue in the Chauffeur Showdown" the Lexus LS 460 requires 207 feet to stop from 70 mph. In the October 2006 issue in the preview test it requierd 209 feet. In both tests the LS 460 also required significantly more than 5.4 seconds to achieve 60 miles per hour. Like I said before, it doesn't matter if the tires are at fault, as the consumer should not be required to purchase tires to keep themselves alive. Also, WTF are you talking about scratched out results for the BMW 750. And the Passat doesn't have the brakes fail even if the problem occurs, just has less boost, it would probably still stop in less space than the LS 460. So the Lexus should have a recall for the horrible braking of the LS 460.

Also, Road and Track got 143 feet required to stop the LS 460 from 60 and 251 from 80. For comparison:

Audi A8: 127 and 219.
BMW 745 li: 117 and 203.
Jaguar XJ8L: 125 and 223.
Mercedes Benz S500: 133 and 247. (last generation)
Volkswagen Phaeton: 122 and 218.

So again, the Lexus LS 460 has the worst braking distances.

Significantly more as in 5.8sec? Go read my review of another real test. The LS also matched the S550. The stopping distance is widely published, I don't see any other organization complaining. Maybe in reality, people have more common sense than to drive that fast and tailgate someone. Remember, these are limos, not pretender cars.

So explain the deflated tires on the S and 7.

btw, 16 ft is about 1 1/2 car lengths. Still longer but it's not the miracle mile that you make it out to be.
