Volkswagen Introduces New Seven-Speed DSG for 2008 that Utilizes Dry Clutches

The latest evolution of Volkswagen’s pioneering DSG twin-clutch gearbox, now featuring seven gears, greater efficiency and a more compact design is set to make its debut in the new year.

The new transversely mounted seven-speed DSG gearbox is revolutionary. It distances itself from the existing six-speed DSG gearbox, which uses a pair of clutches immersed in oil, by adopting a pair of dry clutches. This not only saves considerable weight and improves the efficiency of the system but also makes the new gearbox more compact.

Now that is an interesting innovation! Still don't see the need for a seven-speed tranny, but the overall concept is very cool!

Why put all this cool technology in weak underpowered econoboxes?

If you want a car with a DSG transmission today you have two choices. A bugatti Veyron or a number of econoboxes from VW. I know that the Evo X has a DSG tranny, but I want more than a modified lancer (econobox). How about a nice 300-350hp car (that isn't an econobox) that has that transmission? Until then DSG isn't even worth mentioning IMO.

Well... MidEngine basically said it all!

However, there is more to this than the CO2 savings... The world is bigger than just the US and in Europe, people don't need to have 300-350 hp to have fun! My car has a 240 bhp engine (and because of danish tax system, it is as expensive as a S550 in the US) and I'd love a DSG in that... So what might be an econobox to you might be quite pricey in other places... I've been looking at a 335ci here, and with the accesories I want, that car will be $200k (yes, that is american dollars)... So people might not be able to afford a 300 hp car, but they are still entitled to a fun car...

It would be nice to have a DSG gearbox for 300+ HP, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's worthless for anything less than that. Clearly, you have not driven the GTI DSG gearbox before making that statement.

Guys there is already a 7 speed dsg box that handles 1000Hp. Its the original gearbox that came with the Veyron. The innovation here is not the 7 speed gearbox. Its the dry clutch system which helps to reduce weight..
