The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is widening its Takata airbag probe after a Takata side airbag in a Volkswagen SUV ruptured in June.

To date, Volkswagen vehicles have not been implicated in the massive Takata airbag inflator recalls that in the U.S. have affected around 30 million vehicles from 11 manufacturers. Takata airbags that can explode in a crash have been linked to more than 100 injuries and at least eight deaths. It is unclear how many VW vehicles use Takata airbags.

A Takata-made side curtain airbag inflator in a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan crossover ruptured after the driver hit a deer, a Volkswagen spokesman said. The driver did not seek medical attention, and no police report was filed about the incident, which occurred in June, the spokesman said.
