Volkswagen Group will probably miss a court deadline today to reach an agreement with U.S. authorities over its rigged diesel engines, possibly exposing the automaker to daily fines and other sanctions.

VW has been in talks for months with the U.S. Justice Department, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) over how to address excess NOx emissions in 580,000 diesel vehicles the company sold to U.S. customers.
