Except you got it backwards, the Sky is a rebaged Opel. iirc, it was developed by Opel in Europe. Same as we're getting the Holden Commodore as the G8.

No no no no... It is built in the US on an american GM platform... It might be designed by a german (i think), but that doesn't make it european... It was developed for the Solstice five years ago... That makes it American... Just as the G8 is australian...

WsomethingWsomething... Bugger off! If you can't even get your facts straight, don't try to be a smart a**... Go back to your old mercedes and be pretentious!

Hey little Josh, one could say the same thing about Americans being uniformed and buying into rebadged Toyotas aka Lexus. Your way doesn't always mean the right way. The sooner your homeroom teacher teaches you that the better you'll be when you can drive a grown-up car and not the Hot Wheels you have now.

IS220d - most polluting in its class, worst MPG in its class.

CO2 emissions of (all manual models):
IS220d: 168g/km
Merc C220 cdi: 156
A4 2.0 tdi: 144
320d: 128

And Imperial MPG of:
IS220d: 44.8
Merc C220 cdi: 46.3
A4 2.0 tdi: 51.4

A4 2.0 tdi: 9.4 (there will be a 2.0 tdi with 30 more hp which should get similar CO2 and MPG but will be faster)

The BMW 6er is viewed as a GT car in many circles. It is funny, but the Mercedes SL has a "sportier reputation" than the current BMW 6er. With the newly facelifted SL Mercedes has raised the bar again. I'll be driving the new SL350 with the newly tuned 3.5 Sportmotor next week.

ErichHartmannErichHartmann - 2/15/2008 1:07:00 PM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I forgot to add that the SL equally falls into the GT category, yet it is also considered a sportscar in many circles. Moreso than the BMW 6er. This is quite hard to explain, but if you live in Europe you can somewhat understand what I am saying.

RupertRupert - 2/15/2008 1:33:54 PMView My AgentSpace
+5 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I'm English, and I feel the SL is more of a sportscar than the 6 series. Why? Because the SL looks like a sports car, long bonnet short boot etc.

ErichHartmannErichHartmann - 2/15/2008 12:41:43 PM
+9 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Thank you, Agent009.

The Chrysler Crossfire is actually quite popular here, possibly because it is essentially an R170 SLK underneath. However, the Crossfire design has been rated very highly in Germany and Europe as whole. Performance wise nobody is complaining that the Crossfire is slow or underpowered, because for European tastes it isn't.

Lexus doesn't sell many cars here, and the SC is by far the least popular model. It's not considered very sporty by the press nor is it very comfortable either. People with money consider the Mercedes SL, BMW 6er, Jaguar XK etc. as proven by the list.

ErichHartmannErichHartmann - 2/15/2008 1:03:46 PM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
To be honest, me too. Both the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Corvette are viewed as exotic sportscars overhere, but they're generally only popular with either true Mustang/Corvette enthusiasts and the people who want to be different. The same applies to the Dodge Viper. It is a sad fact that the Viper and Corvette, in Germany, also have a reputation as being the car of choice of pimps, particularly in the big cities.

The Mustang, Viper and Corvette are all sold through exotic car and import dealerships. They're generally cheaper than their European competitors but given their large displacement engines will penalize the owners in engine capacity and kW taxes.

RupertRupert - 2/15/2008 1:33:07 PMView My AgentSpace
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
In Britain the Mustang is a niche car, something fun and interesting, not a serious 3 series or whatever alternative (mainly because the steering wheel is on the wrong side).

What amazes me is that the SLR sold more than Ferrari 612, even though it is more expensive.

What happened to the best selling sports car in the world? The Mazda MX-5. I went to KBA's website in germany, but could not find a list for sports cars but for only the top cars , so it may be that Agent 009 just took out the ones that he remembered to be sports car and mistakenly omitted some, like the MX-5. Because it should be here.

Then for those of you who are laughing at the sales of the Lexus SC in Germany, you might feel a little worse when those in europe see our own list of say..."best selling coupes", that "honor" might fall to the Chrysler Sebring Coupe/conv!! Men, I shudder just thinking about that!! Second may go to the Pontiac G6 coupe/conv. Even the failed Crossfire might be on the top 20 list for sports cars in the US, with uglies like the Lexus SC close to the top of the list too!!

Worse still, the Smart coupe/conv, might end up being the best selling 2dr in the US this year. So lets be careful when we laugh at the Germans, we may not be any better.

Sales Statistics for the 20 Best Selling Cars in Germany in 2007:

Car Model … No of Cars Sold in 2007 … % Change from 2006 Sales
1. VW Golf/Jetta … 214,368 … -9.5
2. VW Passat … 105,308 … -15.5
3. BMW 3-Series … 100,559 … -13.1
4. Audi A4 … 84,092 … -12.8
5. Opel Astra … 83,048 … -23.3
6. Opel Corsa … 79,098 … 29.7
7. Mercedes C-Class… 78,254 … 25.4
8. VW Polo … 76,683 … -10.5
9. VW Touran … 73,081 … -12.4
10. Audi A3 … 70,517 … -8.5
11. Mercedes A-Class … 62,193 … -12.8
12. Ford Focus … 57,546 … -20.2
13. Mercedes E-Class … 56,695 … -0.2
14. Audi A6 … 55,361 … -14.4
15. BMW 1-Series … 55,105 … -2.1
16. Mercedes B-Class … 51,484 … -18.7
17. Ford Fiesta … 50,807 … -13.0
18. Skoda Fabia … 50,328 … -7.9
19. BMW 5-Series … 50,024 … -1.6

I do not think Lexus has a commanding market share in Germany unless you can show the data. Considering overall Lexus sales in Germany were around 40,000 for Europe per ANE with Russia taking like 13,000 of that total, I doubt the figures would be that large. Any bread and butter model of Audi, BMW, and MB likely outsold ALL of Lexus in Europe.

A true tier 1 premium brand has global clout and respect and not just one market. Plus, the US is no longer the most important market considering that Europe will out pace the US this year due to East European growth in the premium class. Just because it doesn't go your way, no need to cry of spilled milk junior. Don't be arrogant. Lexus is only popular here. Means nothing in terms of Tier 1 respectability globally.

No we don't make better choices at buying cars. We buy cheaply made crap because we fall for the gimmicks domestic car companies throw at us. Or some single person with no kids buying a suburban or and f350 dually that never uses it for any kind of hauling or people moving whatsoever. Whats sad is if I buy a Mercedes that gets 24 mpg I have to pay a gas guzzler penalty but I can buy a 12 mpg hummer and no gas guzzler tax. Man if that isn't backwards as hell. I get penalized even though the car I am looking at gets twice the gas mileage. A few people like me do know how to buy a car. Yeah Lexus is a Good reliable alternative to BMW ETC, but there is alot missing. I think the ES is a very nice looking car, and I am a big time BMW fan. I have not had any trouble with my BMW's and everyone I know that has one has had fewer problems than Domestic cars, especially cheap Cadillacs they had before them.

1: Audi TT 14375 (Germany) HUNGARY
5: BMW Z4 6213 (Germany) USA
6: Porsche Boxster/Cayman 4213 Germany plus FINLAND
8: Opel GT 1096 (Germany) USA
9: Chrysler Crossfire 1053 (United States) GERMANY
25: Mercedes SLR 73 (Germany) UK

The Lexus SC retails for 79.000 euros in Germany, or ~$118.000. Now honestly, how much would they sell in the States if they wanted to get the same amount of money...?
