What does AMG stands for? Mercedes planning awareness campagin
It’s kind of shocking to us that many people out there don’t know what AMG stands for. I mean when we hear AMG, right away we think “Hey, it’s Mercedes-Benz’s tuning house that makes a superfast version of all Benz’s including the ugly R-Class” - or “Hey AMG is to Mercedes-Benz what ‘M’ is to BMW.” Apparently, besides the few car enthusiasts like us, not many out there know what AMG stands for.

In an effort to increase awareness about the AMG brand, Mercedes-Benz will go on a road show and will launch a new ad campaign built around its tuning house.

“It will be the most intense AMG...

The ß is pronounced as a double s... So it really isn't that hard to pronounce... But you are absolutely right, it definitely isn't a beautiful language. It is very good at explaining technical stuff in though! Though I'm danish, most of the books I had for my marine engineer courses, were in german...

I can't agree with you that the IS-F is more impressive than an AMG though since Lexus is doing exactly the same as Mercedes when it comes to the performance aspect, use large displacement. That is way easier than the BMW/Audi solution, using high revs! Making a 4+ liter engine spin at more than 8.000 RPM is damn impressive! Just think about it; each piston changes direction more than 260 times PER SECOND at that speed! with the 75 mm stroke of the M3, that means that at 8000 revs, the pistons are moving at an average speed of 45 mph (still remembering that each piston has to stop and change direction 260 times each second)!

If the LF-A engine is all that it has been hyped up to be though, that will be a damn impressive engine!

josh.

those are the names of the town the car are made in, and the people who founded the firm.

AMG actually MEANS SOMETHING. unlike 'F' which is just made-up marketing bullshit.

I love how the article fails to mention what it stands for. Honestly, If someone asked me, I probably wouldn't remember the exact names (as posted above), I'll just say the A and M stand for the initials of the two founders and the G stands for the town it was established. That or I'd butcher ther pronunciation, or even worse, drunkenly improvise and make something up :) As an enthusiast, I should probably know the names and some history of the people.

Last time I was at the Nordsleife, I talked to a real moron with an E55 AMG who claimed that it stood for "Affalterbach Mehrleistung GmBH" ("Affalterbach Tuning limited") and that anyone who didn't know that was idiots... He then went on to ruin his car in quite spectacular way trying to overtake a 911 C4S on the way out of a bend which caused the poor merc to inhale quite a bit of dirt and grass and rip off the most of his rear diff... And we laughed all the way back to Denmark!

Reminds me a few years ago, this dumb guy had just bought a brand new 2003 Acura TL Type-S and was braggin about how fast it was and whatever else. So he got back in his car to leave and this 16yr old kid yells out,
"Wrip it!!!" and so he does while going into a 90 degree turn at full throttle. Front wheels lost traction completely and side swept like 3 parked cars. He comes out of the car and goes, "yo I swear the gas was stuck", we all bursted out laughing at him and his silly lie.

Completely unrelated:

My father owned an Opel GT, his favorite car of those he's had, when I was 19 and my brother was 16. My brother had just learned to drive at this time, and he decided to take it out.

Well, he came back home in one piece, and parked the car on the curb in front of our house. He seemed to have forgotten that the car had an oil leak, though; within two minutes it had burst into flames. My mother was watching through the window and had the entire fire dept on our street in seconds. It's a story I always enjoy telling.

Of course, now my brother has a 2008 Porsche Carrera S, the bastard... because he doesn't have any kids at home. )-:

Lets compare AMG and F

AMG = Real People, Real Story and Hard work and dedication into motor sports. Each AMG engine bears the name of the actual person who hand built it (heritage)

F = Fast? Marketing Gimmicks, and Corporate Ambition. (Empty vison)

I wouldn't mind it's slowness if it was the most fuel efficient or least polluting, but the fact is it emits more CO2 and gets worse mileage (in the UK) than a C350, 335i and A4 3.2 (new one).
Actually it emits more CO2 and gets worse mileage than a X5 3.0sd, all Lexus hybrids, Chrysler 300C 3.0 CRD, CLS350, XC90 D5, Volvo V70 2.5T, S320cdi...in fact all 3.0~ diesels in large luxury cars.
I don't know whether its the engine or the weight of the car that is causing this...

"Nobody can be that stupid in real life."

except the lexus fans...especially the ones who love the hypocritical "hybrids" that can't even match the PZEV emissions rating of a 3-series.

I kind of thought A for AMG stood for the town Affalterbach (correct me if wrong) which makes these AMG variants.

Htay7500...The first post was correct.
The Engineers:
Hans-Werner Aufrecht
Erhard Melcher

The Town:
Großaspach.

By the way Großaspach is the birthplace of Aufrecht and therefore was incorporated into the AMG name. Affalterbach is currently the headquarters of AMG, but is not the A in the acronym.

Instead of Lexus "frog hopping" the Germans (supposedly) just because daddy Toyota's help, show some genuine engineering that the Germans had in the 1900s

Has anyone drove a Lexus IS250?????? If you never owned one you should shut your holes from both ends, folks. I could easily tell you the difference between a Toyota *which is a good thing and a Lexus. Its difference mainly in performance and added luxury..ahh smell of that leather and cup of Joe in the morning without all that jarring ride to work!!!!
give it a try and you'll never think of Lexus as nothing but the best of the best.

I never attacked the Lexus for being a rebadged Toyota or anything (as it's not), but the fact is the 250 engine is one of, if not the worst in its segment.

LOL... It's funny because it's true... But then again, there are lots of german words which could be misintrepretid... "I am angry and slams the door" sounds like "I am gay and f***s a bull" to a dane...
