Could Wolfgang Bernhard be headed back to Chrysler?
I ask not because the boss in Auburn Hills, Tom LaSorda, isn't up to the task of pulling Detroit's No. 3 automaker out of its latest billion-dollar ditch. I ask because the co-pilot of Chrysler's post-merger renaissance, Mr. Inside to Dieter Zetsche's Mr. Outside, may soon be on the market.
Bernhard, head of the Volkswagen brand, is losing his patron at the parochial German automaker. Bernd Pischetsrieder, CEO of Volkswagen AG, abruptly resigned Tuesday -- less than seven months after the automaker re-upped his contract. He will be replaced by Audi chief Martin Winterkorn, the chief good ol' boy of VW's good ol' boys.
This has another hissy fit by Ferdinand Piëch, VW's meddlesome supervisory board chairman, its CEO from 1993 to 2002 and arguably the most retrograde force in the global auto industry, written all over it.
