I agree. this segment has been locked down by Mercedes for years but the mid-sized sedan segment is sewn up by BMW for the simple fact that nothing can touch the M5 (sort of). — 1dott8 (View Profile)

I am glad Bangle Butt is out. The shifter is where it is supposed to be unlike the old one. Turbo charged engine gives it a 0 to 60 mph of 5.2sec. Packed with technology more than Lexus now. I-Drive is finally normal. They did their homework -Yes the S Class is just as good but the real question is- Can Audi keep up to the challenge with a new A8 coming soon?— yoyo123 (View Profile)

No matter how much 001 tries to shove this 'mildly revamped' 7-Series down our throats (and goodness knows he does), the fact remains that it's just another bland, been-threre-done-that, overpriced BMW design, riding on a dated chassis, that any Joe Blow will be able to buy for less than 20k in less than 5 years, just like the 'Bangle-Butted' version. There's nothing special here, just another bloated whale of a car pretending to be something special - which it's not.— Nostradamus (View Profile)

Nostradumbass, It appears that just like your name, you aren't too good at predicting the future, or using the English language. 'Mildy revamped' would indicate something that has only a couple changes from the last version, when actually virtually every part of the new 7 series is new. 'Overpriced BMW design', although relative and opinion-based, would indicate that the new 7 series has a price completely without justification. A large part of that being that no similar or competing objects in the market were near that price. The Mercedes, the 7's main competitor, has always been and is still currently in the same price range. The 'Bangle-Butt' you refer to is still there. The funny part of that statement is that is has revolutionized the World of auto design so much that you are too stupid to recognize it anymore, you only apply it to the old 7 which you were so happy to jump on the band-wagon of critics and have a party with. The 'Bangle-butt' is now a part of almost every car in the world, no matter the country of origin. This 'Bloated Whale of a car' will out-perform almost any sports-sedan in the world, no matter the size or weight. The 7 is still luxurious, and utilizes new and amazing life-saving technology that again and again revolutionizes the auto industry. Hmmm. A car that out-performs everything in it's class, and almost everything in any class. It saves lives with amazing new technology like lane-departure warning and active blind-spot detection. It is perfectly balanced, and although it has over 400 bhp and 450 ft-lbs of torque in true BMW form it out-brakes and out-handles it's engine. It has the best warranty in the entire world covering every single cost on the car for 4 years or 50,000 miles except for tires. Tires which, by the way, are run-flats. Another life-saver. And please 'spare' (pardon the pun) me the run-flat critique. I don't have the energy to retort to another un-intelligent comment of yours. Nah, you're right Nostradumbass, nothing special here. Just another revolutionary design by BMW making us all safer, and again raising the bar of what we should all expect in an automobile. — ShamWOWIE (View Profile)

I just drove this car yesterday. Ended up being a mixed bag. I had the previous 7 series and have owned several high end luxury cars. Ultimately, it's packed with every gadget you could ask for and then about 10 more you don't need (or even thought to ask for). In person the front end was nice, the rear will be love or hate, but the side profile is pretty ugly... The interior looks better than in pictures and contains much higher quality materials than the previous generation. The Idrive display is pretty amazing and definitely large. As for features, having two cameras on the front bumper was cool but an amazing way to squander money. I don't see this ever being used. The heads up display sounds much cooler than it is in execution. After the "coolness" wore off (10 minutes later) I just turned it off and was much happier not looking at it. The new iDrive interface is much better however. On the same account, In an effort to cram as many buttons as they could into a vehicle they now have like 8 buttons surrounding the iDrive controller. Kind of dumb since the new interface is pretty simple. Speaking of buttons, good lord, the dash is so cluttered with buttons that it really takes away from the overall feeling. Who really needs 20 buttons for AC aymore. Isn't this why they made iDrive? A simple temp up / down and auto pretty much would have sufficed. The drive was pretty amazing and definately didn't disappoint. In the end, this care is definately "more is more". You feel like you are getting your money's worth because of all the buttons telling you all the "things i can do". In the end, i went and drove an S550 again and suddenly a sense of calmness came over me. That car can do all of the same things that you want an uber luxury vehicle to accomplish without the cluttered styling, overblown and under thought features, and it simply felt miles classier and more inviting. The 7 was definitely more aggressive of a driving machine but for straight luxury the S class still had it. In the end i couldn't really decide if i would honestly rather have the new 7 or the previous 7. I just felt that this evolotion was in some ways a regression. — 00Vegas (View Profile)

I am trying figure out how you have the opinion that there are too many climate buttons on the 7 compared to the S. The S has 11 climate buttons and the 7 has 10 and two simple knobs. Calling the dash cluttered is just silly. Both cars have the climate adjustments in a simple row so your thought on this doesn't make much sense. As far as the way your drive made you feel, I bet you set the 7 to Sport Plus and drove the crap out of it and then drove the S in a nice "calm" manner. Gosh, I wonder why the S seems calm in comparison. If you want peace and calm you just set the 7 to "Comfort". It changes the suspension, the steering, the transmission, the throttle, and your sense of calmness. Those side view cameras are amazing. How you don't appreciate being able to see around signs and landscaping when attempting to pull out into traffic is beyond me. The headup display allows you to use navigation without looking away from the road. Did you use the navigation on your test lap? It sounds like you were looking to rationalize your ownership experience of your MB: Mission Accomplished.— NannerPus (View Profile)

Your post makes no sense because you arent FORCED to get those options you stated, therefore you can stop complaining and save the money for something else. At least the new 7 series has auto climate control in the rear, unlike the S class (its an option) the S class is nice, definitely. but the steering is too loose. If you are 75, I understand because you may have carpal tunnel and arthritis and cant move a steering wheel. Do you know there are dampening controls standard as well? leave it in comfort mode and the sportiness goes away. — 2ndbimmer (View Profile)

Sounds to me like there's just too much going on inside this 7. A good friend of mine has driven three 7's for the last 9 years or so after getting bored with his LS's. So with his current lease almost up, he was excited to see the new 7. The new price knocked him to the floor before he would even test drive one. He's going back to an LS, probably never to return to BMW. How do I know this you ask??...I bought an LS 2 months ago, and it really is unbelievable. Anyone that critisizes this car just simply dislikes Lexus, period.— Ricks2Dogs (View Profile)

im obsessed with this car!!! i drove an Li with the sports pack (4 wheel steering etc) and it blew me away!! finally a big luxury sedan that REALLY gives dyed in the wool car enthusiasts something to aspire to or buy. Edmunds saying it compares to an S63 for less than S550 money, it beating the S550 in Car and Driver, and the NY Times preferring it to the Maserati Quattroporte dont hurt either ;) I'll take one in Black or Mineral White please!!!!— schnell330i (View Profile)

Anyone, that is not blown away with the new 7 - Deserves to be in a deprivation tank such as a LS and S550 - These vehicles are not for the faint of heart - The road is meant to be felt, and is delivered through the steering wheel in every BMW. The near perfect 50/50 weight distribution is something the other manufacturers don't even publish! The transmission, suspension, engine, brakes, are all completely new and improved, which considering the last generation already stomped the other big 2, a big accomplishment. The new 7 - is the fastest in class, longest wheelbase in class, most horsepower & torque in class, and as good or better on Gas Mileage than the LS, S550, A8. The handling is dynamic, and combined with integral steering, the rear wheels, turning opposite at speeds below 45, and in the same direction to 3 degrees above 45 make this vehicle feel like your piloting a 3 or 5 series at least at low speeds. The technology is ALL ala carte, meaning BMW, gives you the choice of Heads Up display, Night Vision, Lane Departure, Active Cruise etc. You CAN find these vehicles just over 80k, and you can also dress them up to 112k. At the end of the day, the BMW has and always will be the drivers car. The other vehicles may have more toys that you can enjoy at a RED light, but when the light turns GREEN; thats where the BMW is truly built to perform.
