Would YOU Rather Have A "Swiss Army" Knife Type Of Vehicle OR Several Functional Vehicles In A Fleet?

Would YOU Rather Have A
It was only a couple days ago that Audi announced that the US market would see the import of the RS6 Avant. And while some folks saw this news item, shrugged and said "Who cares," there could be something really great here.

The RS6 is one of the most important all-purpose vehicles.

It has the utility of a hatch, 600 horsepower for thrills and all-wheel drive so you don't have to worry about getting stranded in the elements — tires permitting. It is a rare beast of an automobile that is what I call a "Swiss Army" knife.

Another example could be considered the Ford F-150 Raptor. Or, perhaps, the BMW X5M or Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

Alternatively, instead of buying something of that ilk, which is obviously quite costly, other enthusiasts believe it is best to have functional vehicles within their fleet. In other words, you have a vehicle strictly for commuting, you have track-purpose vehicle for setting lap records and you have a beater pick-up truck for hauling things around.

That said, I've go to ask: Would YOU rather have a "Swiss Army" type of vehicle or several functional autos within your fleet?

So Swiss Army knife vs an array of Arkansas Toothpicks, Filet knife, throwing knife. I will take the fleet of more specialized vehicles, although even those will have a lot of compromises.

The rich have all sorts of vehicles in their 12 car underground garage that is hidden from public view in a gated mansion.

It depends really on what you can afford.

There was a time when I was lucky I could afford to go to a junkyard and get the parts to make a car. With lots of kids - Station wagons were the logical choice - back when they carried lots of people - but also could carry a 4x8 piece of plywood. THey were not decked out in Luxury then - but when the girl was #8, and mini vans did not exist - that is what you bought - and I had lots of fun with them. I was actually on a camping trip with the family at Mongaup State Park in NY - on the weekend of Woodstock and did not know it was happening (Mongaup is at the same Thruway Exit).

Obviously - now having the money means I can buy the correct vehicle for the Job - an SUV will never really be a sports car - and the sports car will never get that 4x8 plywood inside either. My Mini-van is getting far more use than I ever thought it would though. Still no underground garage though - just a big RED Barn.

The fleet approach works for me.

Definitely fleet if you have the garage space/resources....

Two adults in my house have (a) large SUV; (b) large luxury sedan, (c) 4-seat grand touring convertible; and (d) two seat sports car. In the mix - two V12's, a V8 and a V6.

Our kid will have his license in a year - what should I get him? Honda CRV; Ford Escape; Honda Accord, RAV-4? Appreciate any suggestions - need something not too large (to fit in NYC area parking), easy to see out of, small diameter rims to minimize flat tires, and low-profile/average brand (he can get himself a better ride once he is an adult with a job).

A Swiss Army knife tries to do many things but does them all poorly.
Every see a mechanic who owned only a hammer?

A swiss army knife vehicle is always best if you live in an area with 4 seasons. You can make any car work with the addition of a roof rack and a special cover for the rear seats for your large breed dog, but if you get an 4wd SUV life is much easier. And you don't care when the first snow comes because you are not running summer tires.

My old Audi allroad (original generation) was kind of a swiss army knife. Now I have 7 vehicles lol.

Lamborghini Urus does the trick as the Swiss army knife.
