US And Japan Reach Trade Agreement, US Will Still TAX Japanese Vehicles That Are Imported
US President Donald Trump has been making headlines since his arrival at the 45th annual Group of Seven (G7) Conference held in France. Why, you ask?

If you've been hiding under a rock for the past, I don't know, 18 months, you may have missed the swirling trade issues President Trump has escalated — for better or worse, you decide.

While it's clear that the situation with China continues to ratchet up in a tit-for-tat, things are different with Japan. President Trump announced a deal with Japan's Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.

According to reports, Japan will reduce tariffs imposed on US agricultural imports. Obviously, this is beneficial for US-based farmers. However, the US will not be altering tariffs imposed on Japanese vehicles imported into the US market, which is a bit puzzling as that was expected to change.

Looks like Japanese-built autos are about to get more expensive in the States, Spies.

...The president claimed the deal was favorable to the U.S. and would be beneficial for farmers.

'This is a tremendous deal for the United States,' he told press while speaking alongside Abe Sunday from Biarritz, France. 'It's really tremendous deal for our farmers...

...Trump also said he and the Japanese leader had ‘agreed to every point.’

Abe said that the agricultural product purchases, which would be conducted by the private sector, were a possibility, but did not comment on any of the other points of the agreement.

Trump said there would be no change to U.S. tariffs on Japanese cars...

@PP- This is a "kissing your sister" trade deal. The real trade deal that was pushed away is the winner. Don't buy into the spin. The next POTUS will likely go back and ask to join the CPTPP.

@CC You are a hypocrite. You insult and throw bombs all the time and then pretend you are offended when someone gives you a dose of your own medicine. If you were as pure as the driven snow, then you could take me to task, but you aren't. I'd give you a professional diagnosis based on my observation but that would be illegal in this context. #SeekTherapy

To those who don't keep up with trade, this side "deal" would not have been necessary if the USA had signed onto the CPTPP. Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam all signed and have similar trade benefits.

This side deal with Japan now tries to give the US some of the trade benefits that it would have received with the CPTPP. Better than nothing.

I can understand how an insignificant trading partner like Canada with a population of 37 million would think a multi-nation trading deal would be great. But when your the worlds #1 economy with the 3rd largest population, you want to make individual deals with your trading partners not blanket deals.

@foncool - That idea my come from a book (with a ghost writer) about doing real-estate deals, but you won't find that strategy suggested in any text book on business or economics. Being part of a trading block / common market is always better than going it alone.

@CanadianComments - That’s E pluribus unum, which works when the many parts are relatively similar in overall size. But when you one entity that is substantially larger than all others it can never be a mutually beneficial agreement to all parties since the smaller members will be feeding off the large member.

As far as finding a How To in a text book on business or economics which are usually written by individuals that have never actually run a business. “Those that can, Do. Those that can’t, Teach!”

You can spout all the DNC talking points about the 4 times Trump business declared bankruptcy, forgetting about the 500 plus other businesses that didn’t. Those are great odds in anyone’s book.

Think before you post. The TPP would have been a disaster for the US as it would open up even more cheap labor shit holes that would result in even more US job losses as American companies closed shop to relocate offshore.

The US is a big enough market that they CAN dictate terms and they will be forced to bend like Japan did and others will follow. Perfect example is Canada. The US consumes roughly 58% of our exports yet we only consume 10% of US GDP. We need the US -they don't need Canada, Europe, South America or anyone else for that matter.

And if the TPP was so fucking great why is China stopping our Pork, Soy Bean, Canola and other agricultural exports or holding 2 Canadian hostages on bogus espionage charges? The TPP means JACK SHIT to China and will accomplish NOTHING like it has to Canada in our current trade disputes with Beijing so give your head a shake

Well - the reality is - the US has not yet reached a trade agreement with Japan - THe Trump Administration is PROPOSING its current negotiations - however - they still must be ratified by a 2/3 vote of the Senate.

The question is whether Moscow Mitch will even bring the agreement to the senate floor for a vote - and that is NOT at all sure. Mitch does not have a 2/3 majority and we do not know what AMENDMENTS to the agreement will be proposed before the treaty is even considered.

So - until we actually know what is in the treaty - and what MIGHT pass - the war between the political sides is premature. Especially when you consider that one side is represented by a person who is of the LEAST trusted profession in the world(An ongoing gallup poll) for the last 50 Plus years - A car salesman.
