The Mission-E Concept Was SO HOT And Unique Compared To Model S! But It Appears The Porsche Taycan Will Look Just Like Another Porsche.
I remember when I first saw the Porsche Mission-E concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. To be honest, I cannot remember a sedan that I had seen to that point that ever looked better.

I looked at it in AWE. The electric part of it did nothing for me but I recall thinking to myself, i hope that's the next Panamera.

Well fast forward to today and we're just a little over a week out before the official launch of the production Mission-E, The Taycan.

Our cover pic is a shot of it just caught almost totally uncovered near the Porsche factory.

After seeing it and the previous spy shots that have leaked all I could think was after all that tease and sexiness, the end result will be just another Porsche.

In fact, in private conversation with some of our Audi moles, many inside think the same thing even to go so far as saying that they think the Audi E-Tron GT is better looking.

So Spies tell us...what is your internal instinct telling you re: the Taycan design?

Looks just as lame a Tesla Model S.

Looks like it was designed by a third grader-then left in the oven too long.

Porsche has done much worse with the first Panamera. This is not bad. Yes the concept was neat, but that's what concepts do. When the rubber meets the road, practicality settles in, you want ground clearance, you want rear occupant space, you want better aerodynamics, you want regulatory compliance, you want a vehicle that is feasible to build, operate, and maintain.

This will not be the last electric Porsche.

The concept was amazing, the Taycan is just okay. I'll reserve full judgement for when I see one in person, which shouldn't be long in Silicon Valley.

Yeah, it's what underneath that counts, and Porsche has moved the needle with the 800V system in a car. It is not a bad start, even if a bit late.

Lol. You're the only person on this site who ALWAYS clicks when they see Tesla. I guess its bait for YOU.

This is life in the car business. Production models are rarely as cool as their concepts. And much less cool than the original design sketches. It would be interesting to hear from Porsche as to why they had to deviate from the Mission-E design.

Million Dollar Question...which existing VW Group platform is the Taycan based on?

My guess is its a warmed over Audi A6 or A4? I don't think its based on the Panamera because that would be too big, too heavy, and too expensive.

Maybe its a stretched and widened GTI? That would be funny

@mre30 the Taycan is based on a new BEV VW group platform that will underpin other sedans and SUV's in the future. It gets a bit complicated after that.

It's a brand new platform.

As CC said above, it is a new platform. However, the Elon fanboys want to trash talk the car before they even see it. Looking like a Porsche is the point for a brand, isn't it? Concepts are usually without compromise. Production vehicles have to be more practical.
It seems Elon's fan club here does not want EVs so much as just Teslas. It must be killing them the the Audi E-tron is outselling the S and X models globally.

I don't think the eTron is selling 5k units a month, have a link?

@Truthy - I think you will find the EV crowd on Autospies to be fairly neutral and actually happy to see more brands take a shot at making a great BEV that is more car and less of an electric appliance. Competition makes everyone better.

Neutral: "not helping or supporting either side in a conflict, disagreement, etc.; impartial."

The EV crowd here is very PARTIAL and opinionated.

The Mission E was actually an ungainly wannabe Star Wars looking white mess. They Taycan will be worlds better.

@MD- I actually think the only difference is the fact that the Mission-E is running 23" or 24" rims. If reduced in size and you get rid of the suicide doors, it is very close to the same car.

Look at the shape of the hood, and doors going back towards the trunk. The concept had much better lines.

Are we looking at the same photos on this page? One is a stunning head-turner, the other is just a standard car that could have been from any model year in the past 10-15 years. The Taycan looks like a photoshopped Panamera.

Well the Model S looks like a bloated Fusion, so what your point?

Taycan looks exactly like what could have realistically been expected.

No one should have seriously thought it would debut with suicide doors and a pillar-less body.

The concept was pie in the sky - that's kind of the point.

Production version is fine. I doubt looks will be an issue once the full production version is revealed.

Well - the Tayca is the first real Premium EV from a well known Premium car maker - and we would expect it to look like a Porsche. IT does. If you were expecting it to look like a concept - those things rarely work to begin with.
