What About You? Study Finds Buyers Will Pay For Driving Assistance But Turn Off The Features Over Time

New-vehicle owners are willing to adopt some driving assistance technologies, but are hesitant about other systems or alerts, according to J.D. Power's annual technology experience study.

Lane-keeping and centering systems, as well as other alerts, can be so bothersome that new-vehicle owners will often disable them or avoid them on future purchases, according to the study.

I have the lane monitoring alert enabled, but have turned off the guidance feature. I don't like the way it nudges the steering wheel, especially when it misidentifies the lane markings. I can accept the beeps, as they don't happen all that often. If I was taking a long trip on the freeway I might consider turning the assist back on, as those lane markings are usually quite good. But not for normal driving.

All other safety functions I leave on.

I Love a rear view camera - and use it to park. Otherwise - unless I was really on a long stretch of Interstate on a Vacation - I would probably never use any autonomous features. Not driving would likely create an attention problem for me.

The older the drivers get, the more relying on these features they will become. The features themselves are getting better, but still require active supervision, which can be annoying at times, and seems counterproductive. When aware of the shortcomings ACC and lane follow assist can be helpful.

These cannot compensate for the decrepit infrastructure, shifted lane markings, or lane markings that make no sense. There are many offset large intersections that have no immediate lane markings so these systems can pose danger when used there as cameras cannot see far ahead. They also cannot see over hill-crests. Users beware.

Some instructions in forms of drivers ed, manufacturers and dealerships during and post delivery would be quite helpful.
