NTSB Says Autopilot Was Engaged As Owner Dined On A Bagel And Coffee When It Crashed Into Parked Fire Truck
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Tuesday that a Tesla Model S was in Autopilot mode when it struck a fire truck in Culver City, California, one of a series of crashes the board is investigating involving Tesla’s driver assistance system.+

The 2014 Model S Autopilot system was engaged continuously for the final 13 minutes 48 seconds of the trip before the vehicle struck a fire truck parked on Interstate-405 in January 2018, the NTSB safety board said in documents posted on Tuesday.

Funny how quickly they blame Autopilot when the driver was not attentive as well.

Agent009, isn't the point of autopilot is for the car to drive? A fire truck is a hard thing to miss - (seeing I mean, apparently not hard to miss for a Tesla on Autopilot).
Didn't Elon the Great claim there would be 1.0 million driverless "robotaxis" by 2020? God help us.

Truthy,

Only Level 5 autonomous systems can do that. No one is near that yet level of sophistication at this time. So the term Autopilot can be misleading.

Agent009, t was Elon that said Tesla would have one million robotaxis on the road by 2020. That would indicate level 5 autonomy since there would be no driver in the car. This accident leads me to believe Tesla is not quite ready for this.

FAQMD, you are absolutely right. Insurance rates on Teslas were heading up for a number of reasons. This was Elon's reaction.

Tesla should be forced to not call their system "AutoPilot"

People this stupid: “'I was having a coffee and a bagel. And all I remember, that truck, and then I just saw the boom in my face and that was it'” need to die.

There used to be an award for these types of idiots, not sure if it still exists... Darwin Award I believe it was called.

The fact is - this system is NOT what people think it is
According to the Manual - you need to keep your hands on the wheel

ANd there should be sensors on the wheel that detect the hands of the driver - and some type of reminder that they need to be there as well.

You all act like this crash was from yesterday. This was from January 2018, some ~30 Autopilot releases ago. If you think Autopilot drives today the same as it did over 18 months ago, then you don't understand how software works.

Don't try to add any facts to the anti-Tesla group on here...

They are the same people that blame the person and not the gun after mass shootings, but then blame the Tesla, and not the person, after a crash....hard to deal with their hypocrisy
