Taycan's Central Touch Screen Challenges Tesla - But Is It Any Better?

Remember when Tesla landed with its outrageously overscaled central touchscreen? It was as big a statement as the firm could make that it was approaching this car-making business from the angle of a tech company rather than a legacy automotive dinosaur.

If you could overcome any scepticism over the risks of distraction that having such a large screen represented, it was addictively good to use, too. No more squinting at a screen, or prodding at buttons – this was tech in an XXL size.

The front dash instrument panel layouts for the Panamera/Cayenne/Macon have been pretty nice. The Taycan is no different. Kudos to VW/Porsche for NOT trying to do some space-agey, futuristic-looking interpretation of some techno-gizmo layout. Which wouldn't look like a Porsche & instead look like the brand was trying to be something it's not.

Everything about the Taycan looks like the typical Porsche, and that's a really good thing.

If Tesla has an Apple-style UI, this is more of a PC or even Linux that is far more cluttered. More screens is not necessarily better, I would prefer a streamlined UI that makes it as fast as possible to get what I need. That being said, I love the ultra-wide screen been the steering wheel. It looks very slick.

Some photos look like there are two cup holders. Some look like only one with the other having some sort of screen controller or handle to turn. Porsche designer coffee cup perhaps?

Using a touchscreen for controls such as HVAC should be illegal, or at least considered terrible UI design. There is a reason why commercial aircraft with glass cockpits still can have hundreds of physical controls.

It's not bad at all. You can also use voice commands to control HVAC.

This is probably the main reason Tesla has gone to selling the model 3 and model y. The Taycan is going to kill their high end models. their one trump card is their extended range over the Taycan. But that may be nullified with the lower powered models. Assuming Taycan sales do really well Porsche will probably have the R&D to develop a model 3 competitor. That's when Tesla will be dead in the water. This car seems to be better then Tesla in just about every category. It will be better built, more reliable, faster charging and less of a chance of catching on fire.

Lower power does not mean more range unlike an ICE car. Porsche would have to cut the weight dramatically to increase range. Dropping a motor would also have a negligible impact since it wouldn't be able to vector between FWD and RWD which adds range. Porsche's best bet for more range is creating a SUV that rides higher up and adding more battery pouches. They could also use two light-weight motors, but that would seriously nerf the performance that is already not super impressive.
