SPIED On The STREET! All-new Spy Shots Of The BMW M440i Emerge
Although BMW has debuted its all-new 3-Series, we're still awaiting the launch of the popular coupe variant. That would be the 4-Series.

While a couple of prototype vehicles have been spotted doing developmental testing and on the back of transport trucks, some of the camouflage has come off the test autos. Now we're clearly seeing the all-new M440i, which will be the two-door sibling of the M340i.

Note the large diameter, M-inspired wheel and tire package as well as the large exhaust tips that mimic the M340i's approach — the 330i just has your typical circular exhaust tips whereas the M340i has a different shape and larger exit.

...An assortment of engines will be available, but this particular prototype appears to be the M440i as it features the same exhaust system as the M340i. As a result, it’s likely powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that develops 382 hp (285 kW / 387 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

The engine should be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system. The latter configuration allows the sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds, before hitting a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h)...

Fugly exhaust tips for a sports sedan. Should have stuck to the dual round outlets, just increased the size a bit. Or copy Audi and go with the large Oval exhaust.

Looks like it’s going to be a slight evo of the current car. Tighter rear quarter window seems to be the biggest design change. I do like the exhaust better than the large round ones on today’s model.

Just as GM proved with the current Generation Camaro, it IS possible to stay with the "same" styling far too long. THey also stayed too long with the Arts and science styling in Cadillac as well.

WHat is really need today is a new Harley Earle or Bill Mitchell - who can actually ADVANCE styling while retaining recognition of brand. Example - while Cadillac under Bill Mitchell radically changed styling over the years - there was enough of the "brand" touches to instantly tell you this had to be a Cadillac. RETRO is only admitting you have no new ideas.

It is time for BMW to move away from their styling - and the longer they take -the worse it will be for them

Time to ditch the twin-kidney grills.

Interesting observation and agreed. BMW has changed in the past,l if you look at the 2002s, 3.0 coupes through the 2000s with the Dame Edna looking 5 series etc... but they got burned by those flame styled Dame Edna cars and are now way to conservative with moves into any new styling directions. Nice observations though... hopefully someone internal to BMW that can make a difference is thinking similarly.... and hopefully they can find their Harley Earle, Bill Mitchell or Albrecht Goertz.
