IAA: Is The Media Hurting The Car Biz WORSE Than Anyone? Based On Their Frankfurt Motor Show Coverage You'd Think They Were Only Showing EV's.
Dateline 9-9-2019. Location: #IAA Frankfurt Motor Show

The world's largest motor show is about to get underway in Frankfurt, Germany in a few hours. If you've never been imagine the convention center in your town full of cars and multiply the building twelve times over. No, we're NOT kidding. The show is MASSIVE. Major Brands like BMW, Mercedes, etc. have their OWN buildings to showcase their offers. You name the model, it's there. Gas cars, performance cars, Diesels, SUV's, Trucks, on and on. And alternative vehicles and EV's.

But you know the funny thing about this show and most shows and launches these last few years?

If you read the mainstream media coverage, you'd THINK the ONLY vehicles there were alternative and EV's.

If you left it up to them, you'd think NOTHING ELSE is there.

Alternative vehicles and EV's are STILL less than 2% of the market.

Yet, if you read the coverage on say CNN which we've linked to here, it's as if the combustion engine has been discontinued.

Which leads us to the question...Is the mainstream media doing MORE damage to the car business and sales of traditional vehicles than any other force?

While I am sure a story on the latest VW Golf model would be fine, the media is focused on what's really new at the show, ie what is newsworthy. A 300mph Bugatti top speed run, Lamborghini's first Hybrid, VW's long awaited ID brand, etc. I fail to see the problem.I just wish I had a pass to the event.

except it's the "media's" idea of what is newsworthy.

millions of other people are still interested in other ICE vehicles as well. vehicles that are available TODAY. what's going on with Nisssan? Hows Leaf sales doing? What midsize & fullsize sedans have been updated & are still available today. Why has Lexus been fairly quiet these days? Does everybody really want a fullsize pickup or SUV? Who's in line to buy the new Corvette?

I have to watch these silly hooligan car shows (Grand Tour, Top Gear, etc) to get any kind of descent discussion about what's on the roads today. And I'm definitely not depending on auto industry news from CNN or CNET or Yahoo unless there's some corporate events or changes.

Leave it to ConstipatedComments to find nothing wrong with the fake news media.

Are you kidding? ID.3 is HUGE news.

What other reveal is nearly as consequential?

how much news coverage is provided when tech companies announce advancements in computing & new faster microprocessors? these are advancements that allow for all of the things we depend on today to function as expected.

whats the latest news on Nvidia GPU's or the new Core-i9 or SoC tech? I can really go a few months w/o some mundane article about EV's.

There is not a lot of innovation going on in the ICE world. The Bugatti used seems like a one-off, not even something that can be bought. EVs are the future across the board unless a better tech comes out of nowhere and surprises everyone.

In the past year? Significant range improvements (you can buy a car with 370 miles of real-world range), costs have dropped, Kia and Hyundai have entry-level EVs, Rivian unveiled a cool premium truck, Porsche launched once of the most compelling sports cars, 250 kW charging was released, Lambo unveiled an unltracapacitor hybrid, etc. etc.

The range improvement was with the exact same battery pack. Next gen motor technology and new suspension added 10% more range, and it already had the most efficient motor in any premium car.

The suspension more smartly lowers the car to reduce drag and improve range as well as uses AI to analyze the road ahead and respond to bumps in real time. It is also upgradeable with OTA updates. I haven't experienced it yet so can't say anything first hand, but initial tests seem impressive. Sport mode on the new suspension is already smoother than the previous air suspension.

I doubt that the average VEHICLE buyer outside of Europe even knows much about that show - there are shows all over the world.

However - the job of the media is present the "NEWS" - not the "OLDS". The fact is - most of the cars in such a huge show merit little if any Coverage because they are already too old to be significant.

If Autospies suddenly decided ONLY to cover cars that were on the market for at least 4 years - it would already have lost its audience.

EVs are indeed big news in Europe, much more so than in the US and there are a number of new EVs being launched.
I find it odd that Autospies would criticize this. Earlier when I pointed out that about 40 percent of your post were about Tesla, you replied you are covering what is news.

The Model 3 is pretty new.
