All Eyes Are On Rivian As It Aquires ANOTHER $350 Million Investment

Rivian, a startup trying to bring an electric pickup truck and electric SUV to market, has been raising a lot of money this year. After large investments from Ford and Amazon, the startup is now announcing a $350 million investment from Cox Automotive.

Last year, Rivian unveiled the prototypes of its R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV.

At the time, we took a close look at Rivian’s electric platform, which the startup claims will enable a range of up to 400 miles.

Maybe it really will come to market after all. A bit surprised Cox would invest in this space vs something with a much more favourable risk profile.

Rivian is shaping up to be a big success.

How do you figure?

Not sure I get the front end of these vehicles. What are the upright oblong holes? Lights? Air intakes to cool the batteries? Or just fu*ked up looking decorations?

If a business case existed for products like this, one of the majors would have already put it into production.

I'm sure the notion of an expensive electric SUV/pickup has been tested to death already in consumer focus groups and if its not in the development pipeline already (as components are available) its not a viable product at this point.

On the other hand, I would think that a short-haul, cheap (i.e same price as IC trucks on market), EV urban delivery van or box truck with 300-400 miles range (plenty of room for batteries in such a big platform) should be a viable product on paper - why hasn't that been rolled out yet?

If such a product could be done for about $50,000 out the door and could last 10 years, that would be a success I'd think.

Indeed. Ford is investing in for two reasons (1) to prevent Rivian for suing them when the F150e shows up with similar ideas and (2) to curtail Rivian's ability to work with others in the off chance they might actually discover something. #RivianIsVaporware

What does the Rivian front end strongly resemble the Ford Edsel times two.
