Mercedes-AMG Chief Says New EQS EV Will Not Be Able To Match The Taycan In Performance
After Polestar’s director of development, Ian Collings, admitted Tesla is “far ahead of everyone else," another high-ranked executive has openly discussed the competition. This time around, Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers acknowledged Porsche’s first production electric model sets the bar in terms of performance and Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming electric vehicles might not offer the same output levels.

Speaking to CarSales in Frankfurt, Moers revealed more details about the first EV from Mercedes-AMG, which will be based on the platform that underpins the EQS concept. He said the car won’t disappoint the customers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will beat or match the performance promised by the Taycan.

Wise man, manage expectations, under promise & over deliver.

I remember when Porsche hyped the Taycan up for what seemed like ever only to deliver similar acceleration numbers to the Model S which has been out since 2012.

The Taycan is an impressive vehicle for sure, just feel the hype and noise died down after we learned it will only “keep up” with a model s in a drag race

The customer that will be buying these won't really care that it can't beat a Taycan as long as it is still fast and has the bells and whistles. It will be more about brand preference.

But this is Mercedes' approach today. Their non-AMG cars aren't designed or engineered to outperform other cars, per se. However, as indicated in the article, the EQ Performance division will make those cars for M-AMG. Porsche designs cars to outperform others from the outset so it makes sense the Taycan is such a car.

For the EQS, Mercedes needs to focus on a supremely competent car with competitive range which, frankly, the Taycan does not have. Then let the EQP division worry about the Taycan.

I didn't realize that MB and Porsche sold their 4 wheels shoe boxes based on drag strip performance.

@Car4life1 drag racing is furthest from what a Porsche represents. Ability to drive it to the track and home afterwards is a huge part of the brand's performance cars. Even their SUV's can be tracked. Something Tesla does not have the durability to accomplish.

The differences in packaging and quality of execution are a big part of the difference between a traditional luxury brand and Tesla. MB and Porsche have way more resources and experience to refine their vehicles and execute manufacturing at a higher quality tolerance.

I'll be echoing other manufacturers when they say that Tesla has a more efficient drive and powertrain currently . Refined over the past few years, but Porsche did come out with a much more durable system (2 speed transmission) and higher charging speeds. Range is "good enough" for most BEV drivers but definitely not matching Tesla.

Good points, but don't forget Tesla's Model 3 Performance. It has an updated battery management system and it does have a track mode setting. It doesn't compete in the higher price point but at $60k, its the best EV for the price. Tesla fans will have to wait for the next gen Model S to compete with Porsche on the track. Coming soon.

focal I wouldn’t say drag racing isn’t the furthest this from Porsche’s mind because at the end of day they worked hard to achieve similar numbers...

You mention track day but I guarantee you tack day is the furthest thing from most consumers lives because drag races happen more often stop light to stop light, on ramp to passing LOL.

Most can count on one hand how many “track days” they have per year if any

The Taycan should be more "911" and the EQS should be more "S Class".

@car4life1 drag racing in Ontario, Canada is an instant stunt driving charge with road side towing. The enforcement rules has taken street driving fun away. The 0-30 times are beyond adequate and negligible between Tesla and Porsche. That's the real world performance number needed. On ramp blast is negligible too. Both cars perform beyond real world needs.

Porsche and the supporting clubs/infrastructure make experiencing your car at the track feasible. It's a right of passage for owning the mark.
