CAR WARS! Head To Head: Genesis G90 Squares Up Against The Mercedes-Benz S560
When it comes to luxury sedans, it's pretty hard to argue against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Although I am sure some users would say otherwise given their experiences, to me it's one of the cars to take home.

That said, competition is fierce.

While Hyundai's Equus wasn't exactly the right fit when it first debuted in the U.S. market, I will say this: It was an impressive ride. Could it square up with an S-Class at the time? No. But, now it's a different story as the company has rebranded its sedan as a Genesis G90 and it has continued to up its game. Equipped to the hilt, this isn't your normal Hyundai.

So, does it have what it takes to challenge the mighty S? See how the clip below plays out.

James and Thomas compare the NEW 2020 Genesis G90 with the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S560. Both cars have V8s and boast a ton of luxury features. Both are AWD, and both make the occupants feel like a million dollars. But the Genesis is new on the block, and for 55,000 Canadian dollars less, can it hope to compete? The boys explore how well the cars drive, and if their price comes with any catches. Watch to see the outcome!

Genesis needs to back their cars more original. It just looks like an ordinary car. No signature design at all.

The cabin of the G90 is one of the most dull generic cabins I’ve seen, it’s the equivalent of generic non copyright songs you tubers use on their vids to avoid lawsuits.

The S Class has features that many have imitated but no one has puts the entire package together quite like an S Class both inside out, it just oozes luxury, Class, heritage, and a lasting impression unlike any other

If I can afford $145k for a car no way I’d get the G90. Whether anyone wants to see it or not there is a difference. The S-Class interior is an occasion. The exterior is commanding. The performance is incredible. The engineering is breathtaking. The G90 is one or two notches below in every single respect and I am personally ok with paying the premium for it. I would even choose a Lexus LS before the G90.

The G90 is a terrific car with an ugly grille. The Cadillac CT6 should be this good, but it isn't close. This is what the Lincoln Continental could have been were it not for Ford doing a "Hail Mary" with a SuperFusion. I happen to love the S Class, but it just isn't worth a price point that is approaching double. I love a good value, but I wouldn't buy either.

Bull eye... thing is there is a space for a car like the G90 vs the S. You're right, had the CT6 been this good I believe it would have sold well... GM is just so pathetic but the Koreans, hey they want to compete and succeed and are dishing up value.

Hyundai should buy Jaguar, ditch the low-quality British designs, and churn out Genesis designs as Jaguars. This is precisely what the Jaguar XJ needs to be to gain traction. It needs to be an amazing car for a price that amazes due to its reasonableness. Or buy the Maserati name.

My brother-in-law's father has the pre-facelift G90 and loves it. He had an Equus before that and before that an S Class, but he was retiring and was very much interested in his spending not being so lavish.

The G90 is a fantastic car. It does not have to beat the S-Class to be successful. The interior is as well done as any luxury car.
Agree that if Cadillac could have this interior on the CT6 it would be a huge improvement.
The G90 has road presence.

Any car with a chain link fence front end must be good. Especially with so many design parts plagiarized from other cars.
The G90 is a design catastrophe.

One does not just APPEAR - and decide that their cars are Premium class cars - even if they build them to try to be.

Real Premium class cars have established a reputation as a Status Symbol - both through actual premium production - plus establishing a Desirability that requires long term consistent leadership.

That is why Infinity and Acura and Lexus did not just come on the scene and fit right in - or maintain their positions. Yes - some of their cars have been compelling - but they failed to be consistent leaders. It is nice to say that you are reliable - but that is not enough to maintain a Premium class position. And it is just as easy to LOSE that position by allowing your product to become outdated and therefore unwanted. Cadillac and Lincoln certainly did that - noting that I owned a CT-6 and loved it. However - a competitor for Mercedes it was not.

AND price is not a factor - there is NO inherent status in buying the CHEAPER car. If you really need to ask the price - you are in the wrong category.

I have spent times building cars from Scrapped parts - to actually buying some higher end cars (notably Mercedes) - and then I inherited. Pulling up to the Valet at the best restaurants - the genesis will get parked in the Back - the Phantom will be right up front - as will the Ferrari. THere is NO competition between Korea Inc, and Mercedes - buy the Genesis - you will have always bought the CHEAP knock-off.

Of course - what can you expect from a Car salesman - the least trusted people on earth for the last 50 years - according to Gallup Polls.

Hyundai/Kia have proved they can build excellent cars. Their progress has been impressive. The big profits are in the luxury segment. Are you saying they should not try since MB has been building cars longer.
It is a fine car. It is not a zero sum game and I suspect the management is well aware people will not be cross shopping the two.
Then again, I don't feel the need to impress people with my car.

Tom, while I agree to a small extent you fail to realize these are "cars". OK, they're machines... if everything was exactly the same mechanically it would come down to "marketing", OK? Mercedes HAS a pedigree but they do not have a monopoly on mechanicals and anything that matches that, is a competitive product. Marketing makes the Mercedes cost 2X as much. The G90 isn't 100% there in certain categories but its a strong proposition. You mention Acura and Infiniti and no one would question those comments, they're not competitors however the Lexus LS400 had a huge impact on the market when launched as it was nearly an S copy but better in many respects, for E Class money, or less. I don't see it at that level any longer due to MB's effort to continue to market a global standard S Class.

That said the Koreans will continue to press and the car will find buyers. It won't end up in the 12 car garages of sports stars or movie stars, Democratic hypocrite politicians or Tom's garage but the S is't worth $150K its just not so this car is going to fill in some gaps. I just wish the CT6 filled that gap...

The S-Class is more worthy of $150K than the G90 is worthy of $90K.

This is the Hyundai/Kia marketing plan with all of their cars. They imitate every other brand and try to dress up the interiors to make them look upscale however using inferior materials and poor build quality they are rattletraps within the first year and the cheapness of materials begins to shine through.

My daughter has had a Kia Soul for 3 years with not one rattle or squeak.
What do you base your comment on?

Well, the Stinger GT I've had for only over a year has had plenty of squeaks and rattles. One major rattle the dealership can't fix. Twice-replaced exterior trim of very poor quality, both covered under warranty. And don't even get me started on the poor paint quality, the easily marred "aluminum trim", door handles that sound and feel like they're going to crumble into pieces, and an info/Nav system that wants to not work whenever it wants.
