German Magazine Reports That Tesla Has Beaten Taycan's Nurburgring Lap Time By 20 Seconds!

We know that there are a few Tesla Model S vehicles practicing at the 'Ring in preparation for an official run on September 21st. We also learned that, aside from Nico Rosberg's offer to drive, Nurburgring expert Thomas Mutsch is confirmed as one of the drivers.

According to German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport, as reported by Electrek, Mutsch has already beat the Porsche Taycan's record time by about 20 seconds. Keep in mind, this information was provided by a witness and is unofficial. It was also just timed "by hand." Regardless, a 20-second lead in practice rounds is pretty incredible.

Porsche: Taycan sets Nurburgring record

Tesla: Hold my panel gaps

Competition is a good thing, the consumer wins in the end, all I gotta say is if this is any kind of sign of the next gen model S to come...All rivals must bring their A game

Porsche’s $200,000+ range-challenged still-no-show already beaten?.. embarrassing.

German EV tech is quite far behind it seems. I wonder if they can catch up or be eliminated on the world stage during the next 5 years? China’s massive government-funded efforts and good-old American know-how Tesla’s massive lead seems they have their work cut out for them. They still can’t figure out the long-range thing and now lost the speed crown even before 1 taycan has even entered a customer’s driveway.

Or worse, a FUX news really fake, and angry, story.

The Porsche is not "ranged challenged" as you assert. It is range by design so that the batteries are adequately cooled for aggressive driving and for the faster charging - oh and to not catch on fire.

Nope Truthy. Both battery systems are ~100 KWh and the weight is similar between the two cars. Something has been poorly designed somewhere in the powertrain (likely the motors) for range to be that bad. They did not sacrifice range for safety, as you will soon see when crash tests come back on the Porsche. Also, battery fires are not caused by the battery just overheating, they are almost always due to some sort of damage to the battery. Even the "spontaneous" fires involved damaged packs (for the i3 and Leaf as well).

You would thing the two-speed system would help with both range and performance, but it doesn't. Even the max speed is greater on the Model S and it will just be one more expensive thing to break on the Porsche.

And then?

Total BS. There is no way a 5,000 lb car can beat the new Porsche 911 (992) Carerra S lap time of 7:25.

Let me guess - the secret "witness" who observed the lap is Elon Musk.

I would still take the Taycan all day, but good for them.

"Timed by hand" means Elon counted on his fingers.
This is such a BS attention getting device.
This just in, the Miami Dolphins "unofficially" beat the New England Patriots by 20 points.

The one reason I don't believe it, do you think if this was real Musk would have been all over Twitter about it.

He was: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1173992505672519680

In reference to the 7:23 time:

"It’s a start. We expect these track times to be beaten by the actual production 7 seat Model S Plaid variant that goes into production around Oct/Nov next year."

Special giant brakes, the entire interior removed, 3 motors, special race tires and driven by a race car driver - yes the Model S beat the Taycan, but not in a form that you could ever buy lol.

The interior was not removed, the car had 7 seats. The two seats in the back are also no longer jump seats for kids--sounds like they were upgraded for small adults like an SUV. They had a bunch of other mods though, wheels, tires, spoiler, grill, wheel sills, guessing the suspension and brakes. The biggest mod is they slapped in the 3-motor powertrain from the Roadster prototype.

All of that info has been announced on auto sites except for suspension and brakes, which is a guess. Haven't seen photos and the windows are tinted, so I suppose Tesla could be lying, but I don't think so.

I wish I got to talk to Elon, the closes I got was at an investor meeting. I don't know what the lie would be here, Tesla has made cars with 7 seats before. If they are already 20 seconds faster, why not add insult to injury and have 3 more seats than the Taycan.
