Looks Like That Next Gen Boxster/Cayman You Have Been Saving For Will Be An EV

No way! Way. Over dinner on the Porsche Taycan launch event, Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the board, dropped the mother of all hints that the next generation Cayman and Boxster will become pure-electric sports cars.

“The 718 just fits EV, doesn’t it?” he said. “The next generation of these cars would be a good time to go all-electric.” Seems fairly conclusive to us, and there was yet more surprise when we asked whether an electric Cayman would be all-wheel driven. “Yes, it needs to be, that makes sense.” Well at least they’ll be parking the unloved flat-four engine.

Epic news, a Boxter/Cayman EV would be super cool. Bonus news:

"The electric Macan will be sold alongside the current petrol and diesel model for a couple of years, Meschke confirmed, before they’re phased out entirely. Still with us? Excellent."

So much for being a lightweight sports car.

Hybrid, maybe. EV, not for me.

And pray tell how is Porsche going to maintain the light weight and good handling with heavy ass lithium batteries? Sports cars offer both a visceral and aural experience. And electric whine does nothing for the aural experience.

It will only be a couple hundred pounds more and will have a lower center of gravity. With two motors it should feel the same or better than a RWD boxter.

Won't they have to add some sort of noise making machine to it? The Porsche drivers I know love their cars to be noisy, ah, I mean, to exhibit melodious engine revving.

(Personally I wouldn't mind a refined two-seater GT.)

The German car companies in general seem to be jumping on the EV bandwagon at breakneck speed and 100%. US and Asian automakers should take note. Around the world governments are enacting serious laws/rules around ICE in cities, stricter emissions standards etc... For the foreseeable future the EV is the future of the automobile and those that get there first will have a serious advantage.
