RENDERED SPECULATION: To SUV Or NOT To SUV, That Is Bugatti's Question...
Bugatti is world-renowned for producing some of the world's most insane vehicles. Not only in terms of price, though.

They're off the charts when you factor in their performance, luxury accoutrements and exclusivity. Simply put, Bugattis are not for the faint of heart, in any regard.

Stephan Winkelmann, Bugatti's president, has noted that the ultra luxury marque is going to do something special. It's just not clear what, exactly. He's noted it will be able to do some off-roading but claims that Bugatti will not build a sport-utility vehicle. He's said that drivers, especially women, want to sit higher for better visibility.

So, what the hell is it?

Given the mixed messages, it seems that most agree it will be some type of sporty crossover. The final form factor is to be determined, however. That said, the fine folks over at CAR magazine decided to take a crack at rendering what Bugatti's soon-to-be new model will look like.

Bugatti's SUV project is gathering momentum and boss Stephan Winkelmann has fleshed out a few more details on the new, taller kind of Bug to broaden the brand's wafer-thin sports car range.

CAR magazine asked the Bugatti president whether there was still a market for hyper-expensive luxury limousines. 'There is, but most customers for these kinds of cars, especially women, want to sit high so they can see out,' he told us. In separate interviews at the Frankfurt motor show, Winkelmann revealed that the new model would likely be a four-seat model with the capability for some off-road driving.

All the signs are pointing to a higher-riding, crossover-influenced sports car as its second model range - but it won't be a traditional SUV, Winkelmann vows...

And therein lies the $64k question. Will it be a high riding Chiron, or just a Cayenne with a new nose and trousers. Would the W16 fit in a Cayenne chassis or will it need something bespoke? Can it use a different engine and still be a Bugatti?

It will be yet another Touareg just like the Cayenne, Q7/8, Bentiguan, and Uterus.

@MD- At $1M per unit, will it be special enough to sell using that platform? It is a stretch for the Bentley. It will be interesting to see what the decide to do. A new platform that they can build a front engined SUV and a large sedan from would be smart.

Reality: The Atlas is a FAR better mainstream SUV than the Touareg.

Reality: The Q7/8 should be built off the Atlas.

Reality: Porsche should get a crossover platform of its own that could then be shared with Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti.

The initial question opens up 2 more items of question:

1. would they use the Touareg/Cayenne platform/base?
Yes - then no don't do it. See Bentayga. It's disappointing.
or
No - put together the best lowest-slung 4-dr coupe SUV ever. use the R&D to

2. would a successful Bugatti SUV help to justify a future sedan? Go for it. But do an anti-Bentayga ultra-luxury SUV that focuses more on the pavement performance & much less on off-road performance.

i.e. I like the idea of a Ferrari SUV, but not a Ferrari off-roader thingy. AWD is cool to handle max torque distribution in all-weather conditions. But it don't need to be a rock climber.

No. Make another Royale.

Given that Bentley has pretty much eaten dirt in its fight against Rolls Royce, a Royale to battle the Phantom would be a good move.

Is the Bentayga not selling as well as the Cullinan? I see more than few Bentaygas when I'm in areas with a lot of high end cars.

I'm in the Newport Beach area once a week and the Bentiguan is not selling well, but the X7 loaded to the gills is.

THe BMW is not even remotely near the same class of Vehicles as the Bentley
Bentley is is the SUPER Premium largely hand made category - the Bmw is mass produced by comparison. Yes - you expect lesser vehicles to sell more.

ANd the Bentayga is a huge sales success - representing almost 50% of total Bentley sales for the last two years. However - is a class where Bentley is the leading Brand - and it barely sells over 11,000 total vehicles worldwide in a year- you cannot compare them directly. Yes - sales have leveled off compared to the first year - as they do with all Vehicles in these categories - but if you are looking to see one on every corner - you will be disappointed

#1 50% of nothing isn't a brilliant success
#2 The Bentiguan is NOT good enough for the price of admission.
#3 The demographics show that people buying the X7 can afford a Bentiguan.

Put a Bentayga side by side with an Audi Q7 and its embarassing how exactly, precisely, similar they are.

Its like they were "cakes" and the Q7 is the tasteful Italian almond cake while the Bentayga is the gaudy, sugarly, multi-colored, icing-laden and decoration-laden rich kids' birthday cake. ALL the hard points - wheel base, side mirrors, glass, windscreen angle, etc are basically the same. Audi is actually roomier inside becauase the seats are not quite as overstuffed as the Bentley's.

There is ZERO reason to buy a Bentayga, unless you have cash you need to launder and your local Bentley dealer will help you do so.
