CAR WARS! Which Entry-level Luxury Sedan Gets The
Although sedan sales have slowed down as buyers shift gears and hop into sport-utility vehicles, they haven't been totally forgotten. Yet.

Recently, BMW dropped its all-new 3-Series and Jaguar and Audi have refreshed their XE and A4 models, respectively. So, what gives? Who's delivering the goods and who's just phoning it in?

Auto Express just published a head-to-head-to-head with all three vehicles squaring up against each other. If you're looking for the abridged version, we've got your back — the verdict is below.

Verdict

First place: BMW 3 Series

Yet another win goes to the 3 Series. It doesn’t ride with quite as much forgiveness as the XE, but in all other respects it’s better dynamically; it handles and steers well, has more grip and the engine is punchier, while the gearbox is the best. It’s also the most practical, the infotainment is strongest, and there’s hardly anything between this trio for running costs. A few minor quality issues aside, the BMW is a great car.

Second place: Jaguar XE

Updates here have enhanced comfort and quality, but not compromised how well the XE drives. The infotainment on offer is improved, too, and the Jag now feels more mature and hi-tech. The engine is a weak point compared with its rivals’ units, but the XE handles well, has just enough performance and feels like a good step up in quality. The infotainment still holds it back compared with the BMW, though.

Third place: Audi A4

While the new A4 is an improvement and the quality is superb, it doesn’t quite reach the heights set by the BMW and the Jaguar. That’s mainly because it’s not as comfortable, and while the infotainment is an improvement in some ways (but a backward step in others), it’s still not as good as the BMW’s. This is also a pricier car, yet it’ll lose more cash. The new A4 is a good car, then, but not a great one.

You'd have to be a moron to choose the Jaguar XE over an A4. I'm no fan of Audi, but come on!

Yeah, how many folks even know what a Jag XE is? It'll have horrible depreciation!

The XE is not that good of a car. The A4 is definitely worlds better. I'd actually take it over the 3 Series if I had to make that choice.

The A4 is a lifeless, bland, boring, nose heavy, under-performing pig.

THe problem with these comparisons is a question - WHAT do the buyers really want. A few years back - Mercedes did extensive market studies to show that people buying Luxury cars - and especially people buying Mercedes cars - want Luxury First over Power or handling. So -Mercedes SPLIT its production - moving performance to AMG versions - and upping the Luxury component for the regular entries - which indeed ended in higher sales.

SO = in fact - it is POSSIBLE that ALL three mentioned above plus OTHERS may indeed be individually what the customer wants - depending on the customer.

And that is why it is important to understand how the cars are being evaluated - because their Stressed points may not be the most major ones (Testers tend to favor handling and power over real Luxury) or even in the order the customer would want. A comparison done - and especially POLLS are Useless unless WE get a copy of the parameters and questions. They can easily skew the results.

AS far as the three above - I would not currently pick any of them. BMW has earned its well deserved reputation for being maybe a good 3 year car - to get rid of because they become Money Pits afterwards - Audi and Jaguar as well. And THAT is the problem in the industry- these type pf cars depreciate like crazy - making leasing the only reasonable alternative.

Te "new" A4 interior looks exactly like the one in the previous generation 3 Series.

Are you kidding. The BMW gauges are the cheapest looking in the industry.

The Jaguar / Land Rover infotainment system is a joke compared to Audi or BMW. And the interior plastics and materials are boarder line rental fleet grade.

BTW, I had high hopes for the XE when it first came out. A sporty, reserved styled entrant into the class that did not pander to gimmicky style trends like the Japanese or Koreans. Exterior archived it, but the interior was a complete miss.

Agree completely. I had Hope's for the Jag when it was introduced until I looked inside. A mashup if cheap interior plastics not unlike the LR Discovery Sport. Plus, when I adjusted the seat to my liking it was about an inch from the back seat. It got worse when I drove it. The steering is fine but the engine was course.

The XE was DOA. The dull, model year 2000, Camry styling did it no favors. Then its pricing was too high for what they delivered. Then came the Jaguar "quality" to ruin the show. The one thing it has going for it is that it is not as horribly built nor as unreliable as a Giulia.

That should be their marketing campaign. "Not as bad as a Giulia!"

Still, in 2019... 20 years into the 21st Century... no Cadillac. Why do these people still have jobs?

Tata paid someone to do an article about the terrible XE to move stock that is rotting on the lot.

As much as I hate the A4, of this trio I agree. Now A4 vs Stinger? Stinger for the win.

Meh, these outcomes are for pure entertainment. The very next publication could review the same cars and the total opposite rankings would likely occur.

Audi is a boring, lifeless, generic, Nose heavy sedan. The BMW looks about as exciting as watching paint dry, and the driving experience isn't too far off from that. Jaguar isn't boring, doesn't look lifeless, and is fun to drive.
