The Average American Now Wastes 225 Hours A Year Commuting To Work

If your commute is getting longer, you’re not alone as The Washington Post is reporting the average American commute reached a record high last year.

Citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the paper says the typical one-way commute took 27.1 minutes in 2018. That’s up two minutes from 2009 and this means drivers are stuck in their cars an extra 20 minutes a week.

225 hours a year commuting is a half an hour to work and a half an hour to home. Its not that much on average. Its the people on the extremes (2-4 hours a day) that suffer compared to those with a 10 minute commute.

Lets see. 365 days - ( 25 days vacation + 104 weekend days + 10 holidays + 8 sick days) = 360 hours / 218 days = 1.65 hours commuting a day. Right?

That's an argument for automated driving... or better public transportation that people want to ride... I like the idea of Gondolas everywhere :)

Everyone should be allowed to work remotely / work from home if it makes sense for their job. I have done so in my last 3 roles and it is very productive. Not having to go to an office is a godsend when the weather is poor or you have things to do in your real life (getting to a child's soccer game for instance).
