Forcing Change: California's Gas Prices And Gridlock Are Intentional

An October 8 CNN story about gasoline prices carried this headline: “California gas prices soar above $4, reaching the highest price in five years.” One can only wonder if most Californians understand that that is all part of their state government’s plan.

For the week of October 4, the average California price for a gallon of regular reached $4.18. That compares to a national average of $2.65, and average Texas price of $2.305, according to data kept by AAA.

What is the point of this post? Everything is more expensive in expensive areas. Let’s do a comparison of average home prices next! Or average income per capita!

When Trump wins in a landslide in a year--and he will--the next day will begin the bitch slapping of California. Newsome will shit his pants.

If he could do that today he would. A re-election wouldn't change anything.

Umm NO. Yet again, you're wrong. Once he has achieved re-election--which he will do handily--he will have nothing to lose, so it will be full-bore attack.

Except he was not elected king. Although republicans do not understand this, the constitution creates three co-equal branches of government. What has made the US successful is being run by rule of law.
tRump keeps throwing shit up there that gets held up in courts so more thoughtful people can rule on it.
And look at history, second term presidents have a very short window before they are lame ducks.

California's gas tax is only marginally higher that other states. But to be fair some don't tax their gas that much at all..

June 2019 LA Times new article-

The increase taking effect next month (July 1st, 2019) means the total state taxes and fees on gasoline will be 57.8 cents per gallon, based on the current average price of gas across California.

That will just edge out the 57.6 cents-per-gallon charged by Pennsylvania. Washington state will remain in third place, charging motorists 49.4 cents per gallon.

(Some of the California tax is based on a percentage of the cost of a gallon of gas, so a significant drop in prices could cause the overall tax to drop — at least temporarily — below Pennsylvania’s.)

Alaska and Missouri have the lowest gas taxes in the country, with per-gallon charges of 14.34 and 17.35 cents respectively, according to the American Petroleum Institute. Motorists in all states also pay 18.4 cents per gallon in federal fuel taxes.

Drop the taxes and any subsidies for oil/gas. That would probably bring gas prices to $6-8/gallon like in Europe.

@MD-Don't let the facts get you down. But feel free to product some on your own. But you seem cranky. The current downward slide of your chosen POTUS and his cronies wouldn't have anything to do with that? LOL..

Removing subsidies for oil and gas, will increase gas prices since gas will be more expensive to manufacture.

The fascist libtards in California want cars off the road. Their goal is to make gasoline $50/gal and make it impossible to drive. Small businesses are closing in droves already. Now they've enacted state wide rent control, which will actually cause rents to rise even higher as landlords will just raise rents through the roof when a tenant vacates. I've lived in this state for over 50 years, and the quality of life has gotten worse and worse as progressive policies have gotten more pervasive.

This: "6th largest GDP in the world and home to some of the most valuable companies in the world" misses the point and it is an example of misdirection.

It is the classic example of pointing to a fact that has either no relationship to the proof it purports to give or which only tells part of the story.

I realize MBKing is probably some FOTB living in Glendale California who wears gold chains and far too much cologne, but the size of California's economy is juxtaposed with the state budget where we are always teetering on the verge of bankruptcy rather than building up a scary big surplus.

From the tax foundation.

The Netherlands has the highest gas tax in the European Union, at €0.79 per liter ($3.53 per gallon). Italy is second, at €0.73 per liter ($3.26 per gallon), followed by Finland and Greece, both at €0.70 per liter ($3.12 per gallon).

the lowest gas tax in Bulgaria, at €0.36 per liter ($1.61 per gallon), followed by Hungary (€0.38 per liter or $1.70 per gallon), and Poland (€0.39 per liter or $1.74 per gallon).

The state has 36 million people. Why wouldn't it have the 6th largest economy? But the fact of the matter is small businesses are closing in droves. And last year over a half million folks moved out of the state. What's happening is an increasing divide between the haves and have-nots. Seems progressive policies aren't so progressive after all.

Why would it surprise you that people are moving out of california - they are moving out of some North Eastern States in the same manner.

The more the tax structure favors the super rich - the less the middle class can afford them - and certainly the retired people cannot afford them as well. So they have little choice but to move to states where the can afford to live. IT is not Rocket science - and in an economy where there are more jobs than people looking for them - people are moving to states with the lowest taxes in their income range. If not for a recent inheritance - I would already have moved into my home down south as well. However - high taxes also means housing does not sell well either in those states.
