Strike Day 26: GM Sweetens UAW Offer But Can't Understand Why Job Security Is An Issue

General Motors Co.'s latest offer to the striking United Auto Workers included $2 billion more investment by the company than an offer it made and publicly released details of on Sept. 15.

In total, GM would commit to $9 billion worth of direct and indirect investment. Of that, $7.7 billion of that would be direct investments, including building an electric truck at the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly plant. The plant is among four GM facilities in the U.S. that were to be idled.

The contract dispute b/t GM & UAW most likely includes some 3rd-party negotiator. If you think she's making final decisions on her own, you should probably read-up on corporate organizational structure. GM isn't some warehouse level car shop.

And the CEO isn't the end-all decision-makers within their corporate structure anyway. GM's BoD Chairman is the person who accepts/denies this type of corporate deal. I'm confident in Barra, but intimately she takes guidance from the GM Chairman.

Saying the GM CEO is specifically responsible for this or any other corporate decision is plain silliness.

That said she is the public face of GM and has, or at least had a certain position of respect and influence in the company. Right now it is rather clear what the union concerns and demands are, it is not clear at all what GM's position and plans are and how they rationalize them.
