Will EVs Cost MORE To Own And Operate Than Gas Cars Because Of Fees And Taxes?

With more electric vehicles in use and fewer vehicle owners paying gasoline taxes, some regulators fear EVs are driving down revenue to maintain state roads.

But not buying gasoline doesn't mean a free pass.

EV owners in many states are getting hit with fees in lieu of traditional gasoline taxes. And in some cases, they are putting far more into state coffers than their counterparts who pay at the pump.

Still less than 2 percent of new car sales and insignificant compared to the number of registered vehicles in the US. Stupid article.

Did anyone seriously think that the bureaucrats weren’t going impose new taxes to make up for the lost revenue from the gas tax?

In Illinois it will be $1,000 annually which offsets the declining tax incentive to buy an EV. How many stae employees does it take to arrive at this?? Drop the incentive and the fee.

Washington state has added a $75 per year fee on hybrids. Not PHEV, hybrids. You know what charges the battery in a hybrid? The engine! All they can do is recover some of the wasted energy from braking. But the gas engine is what moves it the first place to provide the momentum that can be recovered. Now if it has a plug (PHEV and EV) we now pay another $150 on top of the $75. My Niro will be about $800 when I renew my tabs next year.

I traveled to several areas around the country recently on business. You see Teslas mostly in California, but hardly anywhere else.

Shows how much potential market there still is left.

Outside of the coastal urban areas (4 key counties) there are not many Teslas to be seen even in California.

Wrong the cold weather effect on batteries makes the range an even greater issue in cold weather states.
To further disprove your assumption, Teslas have been available in most of the US for years, yet still a quarter are in California.

Californians were also among the first to adopt early tech gadgets like computers, smartphones, etc. It's a bellwether of what's to come.

Yes, maybe 30-40%, but you will save on gas/maintenance over the long run, even paying taxes. I think you'll at least break even on a new Leaf.

They have to be taxed at some point to pay for road repairs, but governments will inflate gasoline taxes to keep EVs more economical to operate.

Honestly, traffic is so bad in Silicon Valley that the HOV lane is no longer a benefit at all. It's just as slow as all the other lanes.

Not to mention, in CA you need to buy a new EV every 3 years if you want carpool lane access while driving solo (carpool lane stickers expire in 3 years).

You can't renew?

We don't have HOV lanes here.

You can't renew and the crazy thing is they are converting HOV to toll lanes where single riders can pay to ride. Why would you pay to go the same speed?

We've had High Occupancy Toll lanes in NoVA for a few years now and they are spreading rapidly with Maryland moving forward to use them as well. With dynamic costs sometimes exceeding several dollars per mile the message is clear, politicians here want to kill the personal automobile

The High Occupancy Toll lanes around the DC area look more like something for the elite so they can speed by the peons stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. It's a pretty bad image to project.

I wish that were the case in the Bay Area, they might actually be worth something if they worked.
