DRIVEN: Chevrolet C8 Corvette - Can It FINALLY Take On The Big Boys From Europe?

There have been rumors of a mid-engined Corvette for over 50 years. But now the mystery is over: it’s finally here, and we’ve been lucky enough to take one for a drive.

In many ways, the latest Corvette represents a complete departure from its predecessor, but despite the short nose and elongated mid-section that results in having an engine in the middle of the car, it still looks a lot like a Corvette. It’s all fighter plane and pointy bits; attitude and angles.

While it’s not a full test, I am surprised by the positive tone of this report. Brit car mags are usually quite harsh in their evaluations of American cars.

That is the truth. They are very biased toward Britiah marques in particular.

Can It FINALLY Take On The Big Boys From Europe?

You could have ask this question in 1966 about 3 Ford Gt 40's @ LeMans
…. and thumbs up to Chevy for the C8

For Chevy's sake, I hope the C8 is not a quality debacle. Given GM's track record with underdeveloped 'brand-new' cars, I am very concerned that the !!year!! of press build up is going to come un-done if quality problems surface. Because of the unique packaging characteristics of mid-engine vehicles, there are thermal issues, insulation issues, and cooling system issues.

It would suck if some early ones spontaneously burst into flames (as some Ferrari's do on occasion).

Hey, Tesla invented burting into flames.

Remember that the Corvette is a Chevrolet which is the cheapest level of manufacture that GM has to offer.

Chevrolet MAY BE the entry level division of General Motors - but the Corvette is and pretty much has always been produced unlike any other current General Motors vehicle - has far more hand-built components (even the engine is hand-made) - and shares its platform with NO other General Motors product.

While indeed - there is more hand-made content in a Ferrari- Ferrari does not produce the quantity of cars that Corvette does -nor does it really sit in the same price range as a Corvette. Because of its Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber content - there is a limit to the production of the Corvette - which actually would be cheaper to produce in Metals which is possible today - when volumes reach 20,000 or above.

Today, it would be hard to say that the Corvette is made CHEAPLY to Be a Chevy.
