WHY Are Automakers SO Hesitant To Make Integrated Dashcams — Like On Teslas — An Option?
As we continue to see automobiles evolve with each passing year, it's stunning to see how much technology can be packed under their respective hoods. Just think of ALL the progress that's been made over the past five years.

From safety improvements to camera technology to semi-autonomous features. Vehicles are so high tech today!

But, we've noticed something a bit peculiar.

Auto manufacturers largely aren't taking advantage of their camera systems. While there's more cameras than ever before and software able to stitch together amazing three-dimensional images for parking purposes, these systems are really operating at a 1.0 level. That's because there's lacking creativity.

Tesla allows for its integrated dashcam — called Teslacam — to capture and store footage from drives. This allows for stunning moments, like this, to be captured. See video, below.

Although Chevrolet equipped the C7 Corvette with a Performance Data Recorder meant for track purposes and spying on valets, were not aware of it being used for street purposes.

This begs the question: Why are automakers SO hesitant to make greater use of today's tech-enabled vehicles that already are putting a large number of cameras to use? What gives, Spies?

Be careful what you wish for. If technology limited access to only you (and it wont) it would be ok. However everyone of your indiscretions, lapses of judgement and aggressive moves will be recorded and available to authorities, courts, insurance companies, auto manufacturers, divorce lawyers, etc etc. Its not that you intend to do anything wrong, its the unintended consequences of having a visual record of what you did.

Will it record you pulling up to your mistress' house, or skipping a roll, etc.
A German parliament member got toll cameras removed after he was photographed by one with his mistress in the car.

The fact that it does not exist, even as an option, is really hard to fathom. Make it so!

To all.. The question was why automakers have not started building into their cars (std or optional, dashcams like Tesla has. Not whether or not they are available as an accessory. If you don't read the article closely you miss the point.

Big time. People think that they have a right to do surveillance, but they only do under limited circumstances. I have security cameras here at the house, but in some cases, the aiming of them has to be mindful of neighboring property or public space along the frontage road. Aiming a dash cam and shooting video can be construed as illegal surveillance in some circumstances.

I am sure the insurance companies would love them too..... also it is always the people with the camera catching someone passes them abruptly but doesn't show them driving 50 in a 55 in the left lane or the break tapping, etc.

I am sure liability plays a part in this as does privacy. I doubt many consumers are asking for it. There are aftermarket dashcams available if you really want one.
Another attempt by Autospies and fanboys to give Tesla a win.
One thing Tesla has not accomplished yet, be a sustainably profitable company.

Guess what, Tesla is the only company to have a Dashcam standard in every car. The bonus is it comes at no additional cost and uses multiple cameras.

You think Russian dash cams are crazy? You haven't seen anything yet.

Car manufacturers cannot make any money on integrated dash cams. How much can they charge $500? It cost the manufacturer $15 for the dashcam and installing at the assembly line will be $75. The dealer makes 60% on options so, the cost of the manufacturer is $90 and price of $200 or profit of $110!

Good points not to mention you can buy an aftermarket car cam with numerous features for far less.
