Will People Fall In LOVE With Electric Pick-up Trucks OR Will They End Up Being LESS Desirable Than EV Cars And Small SUVs?

Will People Fall In LOVE With Electric Pick-up Trucks OR Will They End Up Being LESS Desirable Than EV Cars And Small SUVs?
So, it's pretty clear that we're reaching a shift in the types of all-new vehicles that will be on offer in the not-too-distant future. We're moving from gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles to alternative energy sources.

Hybrid vehicles have already made an impact over the past 15 or so years. Electric vehicles are coming online and command most of today's headlines; however, you have to keep in mind the percentage of market share EVs actually hold, today. It's in the single digits and on the lower end, at that. We're talking about two percent, folks. Hydrogen still has a HUGE way to go.

Coming back to EVs, we've seen sedans and sport-utility vehicles launch. The next serious volume-moving segment that's on the horizon are pick-up trucks. There's a big rush to deliver the benchmark product here because this could potentially be a massive money maker for the winner.

But, we've got to address the elephant in the room.

Will EV-powered pick-up trucks actually be MORE desirable than the sedans and SUVs we've seen launched to date? WHY do you think so? If NOT, why?

More desirable, especially for trucks that are used for work purposes. The cost per mile and day-to-day expenses will be much lower for an EV truck. Amazing torque and acceleration are the icing on the cake.

2X the cost for the price of admission. Dead batter down time. EVs are not ready as full replacements to ICE. They cost radically more and cannot be recharged as fast as filling a tank.

Charging at 250 kW, you can get 100 miles of range every 5 minutes. That's good enough for a truck (assuming you can't charge it at home or work when it's not being used). Cost shouldn't be that far off from a high-end premium truck, don't think it will cost double for 200 miles of range.

I think you're looking at $50-60k for dual motor AWD and 200 miles of range, and excellent acceleration/torque. $60-70k for 300 miles of range and $80-90k for 400 miles. I'm expecting this from all the EV trucks coming out from Ford, Rivian, and Tesla by the end of 2021.

It will be a niche, at first - but not for long.

Niche unless it is priced similar to an F150 -which it can't be with the cost of batteries. That and someone beat this thing with the ugly stick...

EV Pickups will be niche/lifestyle products. They will cost 2X the price of an F150/Ram/Sierrado (sic). The down time for charging will be a huge disincentive for a number of people who use their vehicles as work trucks.

When you run out of battery power, and you are stranded on the side of the remote road, do you wait till someone shows up with 150 fresh 'D' batteries to give you a jump?

Except, it will soon become much easier to find an outlet or charging station than a gas station. That's already the case in many places. Even in the middle of nowhere, EVs can charge at RV parks.

I think they will do quite well. Often work trucks don't travel huge distances each day and you may be able to tap into the truck batteries for your power tools.

Not might, that's a given that you'll be able to power your tools with an electric truck. That's a big advantage.

Its all down to battery technology. Right now its still a work in progress. Its getting better. Since solid state batteries that are reliable and can be as efficient as Lithium Ion batteries is still many years off in the future the challenge is to get better improved Lithium Ion tech, massive amounts of fast volt charging stations nationwide. it is happening but no large scale EV ales can happen until these issue's improve.I think we will be in a very different and better situation 2 years down the road.
