How Much Do You Think Tesla Model Y Sales Will Affect The Model 3?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated he does not expect the upcoming production and sale of the Model Y to cannibalize sales of the Model 3 during the company’s Q3 earnings call

After being asked about the company’s concerns of Model 3 sales dropping amidst the upcoming release of the Model Y by New Street Research’s Pierre Ferragu, Musk responded that the company is not concerned about possible cannibalization of sales. “No, I don’t think we’re expecting to see cannibalization of Model 3, one is a sedan, one is an SUV,” Musk said. Tesla CFO Zachary Kirkhorn added, “The best comparison we have for that is when we launched Model X, and we had Model S at the time. We didn’t see any cannibalization there.”

SUVs are gaining market share from sedans across the industry. This is a positive for carmakers as customers are willing to pay more for these crossovers.

Looking at that side image, the two really don't look that different. Sure, the Y will sit higher, but why have such a pronounced slope in the hatch area for something being branded as an SUV/CUV? Losing a lot of potential storage space in the back. I think I'd prefer the e-Niro or VW ID.4 over this.

The teardrop shape is for aerodynamics and efficiency that translate into range and faster charging.

To add to vdiv, the Model Y is more aerodynamic than the 3 despite being larger. Solid engineering that explains how they are getting 300 miles out of the same battery as the 3. Range impact is only 5%

Okay, so the Tesla website doesn't have a ton of info besides the range estimates. It doesn't even include dimensions :/ Here is a good comparison: https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/24/why-its-okay-that-the-tesla-model-y-kinda-looks-like-a-sedan/

At the 5min point you can get some size comparisons with the 3 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNVSa5sPB1M

With a CUV/SUV, maximum efficiency takes a back seat to usable space and practicality. I'll take a 5% reduction in efficiency to have more usable storage space behind the rear seats.

New video came out today of the Y compared to several other cars, it looks much larger than the 3.

There might be some impact, but the two people I know that reserved the Y would not have bought the 3. They wanted/needed more space but would not be willing to fork out for the X.

it does not have more usable space. it is merely a raised Model 3. And to SanJose, "the teardrop is for aerodynamics" is really towing the party line. It is for the purpose of using the same structure as the Model 3 to save costs. Why make an SUV without the room of an SUV.
You fanboys work overtime trying to support Elon BS.

It's not a raised Model 3, the seats are on risers. There is definitely more space inside the car, and the 3 is already almost as roomy as the S inside for passengers.

@truthy - the only towing will be the Model Y back to the service center when it ultimately breaks down.

Good catch, Jeff.
SanJose said, "it is not a raised model 3, the seats are on risers." Thanks for making my point.
Further, saying it has as much room as their other sedan does not answer why not make a two box, practical sedan? Because they use the 3 structure knowing their fanboys will buy it anyway.

Yes, they will affect sales but increased demand for Model Y will more than make up for it.

Like every other Tesla (aside from the disastrously flawed 'Model X') the Model Y will irreparably cannibalize the strongest selling Tesla model that preceded it.

Tesla sales are basically a 'zero sum game'. In a universe where all Tesla buyers only want the "latest and greatest", last year's new model is just that. After the inevitable sales gimmicks and effective discounting, the prior model just plummets in sales.

This dynamic is evidence that there is no enduring value to the Tesla brand (because the brand cannot support a full lineup of diverse models) and the customers are not loyal (aside from the bargain hunters) Tesla convinced my friend to trade in his 3 year old Model S for a new loaded one that was implicitly discounted [lease payment cheaper than the old one] on a higher content car.

$2-3k more than the 3 and you'll give up some range and performance. I love the roof and the hatch on the Y, those would be the selling points for me.

Why, Tesla PR, are the roof and hatch selling points? Are you aware that the overwhelming volume of small crossovers are two box designs for practicality? This looks hideous.

The roof on the Y looks amazing, it's all glass with no crossbars. The Y looked pretty damn good in person, definitely better than the X.

As for the hatch, it's just more practical for loading a ton of things in the back. That is the one thing I miss about the Model S when I drive the 3, having a powered hatch in the back (which the Y does).
