Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Tesla Model 3 Performance Vs M3, C63 AMG, And Giulia QV

Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Tesla Model 3 Performance Vs M3, C63 AMG, And Giulia QV
emember that tweet from Elon Musk where he promised the Tesla Model 3 would accelerate faster than a BMW M3 and would handle better? It’s the car that should “beat anything in its class on the track.” That’s quite some claim, Elon. It's time to find out whether that’s true.

Thanks to a new video from TopGear, we can see the all-electric sedan in its Performance version go against three of the fastest production sedans on the Earth these days. The Model 3 faces the BMW M3, Mercedes-AMG C63 S, and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. And, more importantly, the four performance cars race on a ½-mile track. What do you say now, Elon?

Too funny. The Model 3 performance beats the very best sports sedans a their own game. Imagine if it was tuned for performance or had a Plaid version that is made to be a true sports sedan. There is more that this car and the bigger Model S are capable of, that's for sure.

Take special note, the car was at 57% battery when they did the drag race. The 3 can battle with the best of them at half charge.

With the 5% OTA performance upgrade, I think it would have won the drag race.

@80Ho- Try sticking an entire campsite 2 friends and a dog in a Leaf and get back to me with the results. Or a Honda with a coffee can exhaust. Same result. #stupidcomment

@coleX2 Canadiancomments continues to demonstrate that he is a hypocrite. He's a typical "do I as tell you to do but that does not apply to me" Liberal hypocrite.

@CC You cannot be browbeating people to buy EVs when you have ZERO intention of doing so yourself. You trot out this bullshit of the dog crate again and again and again. But we all know that every time you get in your gas guzzler, the crated dog does not go with you.

I am too lazy to keep taking the XL dog crate in and out of the truck so I leave it there. A two-box design BEV SUV with real space would be nice if it existed. I hope one day it will. A 2nd car as a BEV would be nice for short trips. But there isn't a 2nd person to drive it. BEV's are fun to ride in as it feels like the future has arrived. Do what you want, but as even Honda has said it will be completely electric by 2023. Civic nation can be rightfully credited for saving the planet.

This video is old but yes, the Model 3 kicks ass.

Chris Harris bought one after this test.

Because it is besting the luxury brands at less cost with a lot more practicality.

Until the battery overheats, or you lose range (lots) in cold weather, or the brakes fade after multiple stops, or there are no parts for your Tesla and you must wait months for repair.

As can the 3, battery was at 57% and it was a 0-130+ mph race.

You keep referring to the battery only being at 57 percent as though that were a positive. The Tesla only wins on acceleration under ideal conditions.
The ICEs can win the race with 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8 tank of gas, even in cold weather.

The car would be slightly faster at 90% charge, not a big improvement but still something. In the quarter mile the 3 crushed the competition... it was only at the last second of the half mile that the Mercedes caught up. BTW, that Mercedes is $80k vs. $56k for the Model 3.

Cole Cole, that is how things work. The 57 percent charges excuse for the Tesla tells you how desperate they are for a win.

It's maybe a .1 or .2 second difference between 90% charge and let's say 40%, it's not a dramatic change. The cells are more difficult to balance at a lower state of charge and some modules might not be drawing full power.

But how long will it last. My friends Model X just left his house on a flatbed today after 2k miles. Does not power on at all.

They believe the flash memory burnt out. Bricked the car.

WTF, that's lame. They really should have redundant flash memory, RAID 1 style. It would cost like $10 per car. My S is 6 years old, never had that issue.

I will never buy a Tesla that looks like a taxi or a rental car.

People buy cars for many reasons. Raw acceleration is not the #1 priority for most buyers. The Model 3 may out accelerate other cars, but the C63/M3/Guilia owners get to enjoy almost bespoke interior quality, while the Model 3 owners must suffer through Honda Accord LX level interiors.

I don't think any Tesla owner is suffering. It takes no time at all not only to get used to the interior but to prefer it. A year before I got my 3, I was not a huge fan of the layout. Now the second screen and extra clutter on the S annoys me. Sometimes its more difficult to make a complex device look simple (ask Apple). The 3 nailed it, I didn't get it at first but now I see it was a brilliant design that is more practical.

Meh, touchscreens are never more ergonomic. Knobs, push buttons, and levers are way easier to use.

Way less flexible as well, especially when you're basically driving a computer these days.
