Sedan Segment Dwindles To Under 1.5 Million Vehicles In 2019

When TTAC introduced the series, Americans were still acquiring over 2 million midsize cars per year. That fact, the 2M+ aspect of the segment and the 1M+ nature of the top models, combined with the category’s 12-percent market share, caused many readers to doubt the possibility that any other intermediate sedans would ever bid farewell.

Others have, of course, fallen by the wayside. Joining the long-lost Mercury Milan, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura, Suzuki Kizashi, Mitsubishi Galant, and Dodge Avenger in that great midsize parking lot in the sky are cars such as the Chrysler 200 and Ford Fusion. The Chevrolet Malibu is not long for this world.

Not only are sedans collapsing, so are hatchbacks. Supposedly, the GTI will be the only Golf offered.

Ha bucking the trend here, we just traded the wife's SUV for a sedan on Saturday... Range Rover Evoque for a BMW 4 series. Test drove new SUVs all day from an X5, X3 M40i, Stelvio, Macan Turbo and even down to a JCW Mini Clubman (that is an interesting animal)... but then saw this beautiful low mileage used 2016 BMW 435i gran coupe, carbon black/saddle, M sport. So far I am certainly loving it. No SUV can truly feel like a good handling low slung sedan.

Not exactly a surprise. But I take issue with the idea that an SUV cannot be a good handler. My 2019 CX5 Grand Touring with 19 inch wheels has a great ride/handling compromise. In fact when the salesman demonstrated it to me prior to me purchasing it he did a fairly tight off ramp from a highway at 50MPH. I would venture to say that an average sedan would not do it any better or faster. Yes it had a little body lean but not much. Further rides and handles better than my brothers 2014 Audi Q5.

Oh I agree with you, I did not mean to imply that an SUV cannot be a good handler, just they will never be able to feel like a low slung good handling sedan. My brother in law's wife has a CX5 as well and from having ridden in it a number of times, it handles nicely. My brother in law has a Macan Turbo that I drove a lot and it handles great, however it will always feel like an SUV, although great tires, suspension tuning, steering etc... do a lot to overcome the basic deficiencies of the platform, an SUV will always have a higher CG, the weight distribution front to rear and bottom to top is just not an ideal platform to make a great handling vehicle.
