BMW 2 Series Vs Mercedes CLA - Which One Will Rule The Premium Compact Sedan Segment?
The historic rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz continues and now extends to a new segment. The niche class of premium compact four-door coupé-sedans (yeah, we know...) was started by Mercedes with the CLA back in 2013 and the Bavarians are finally joining it with the first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupé. The recipe the two brands follow is pretty much identical – a low and profiled body with a sloping roofline towards the tail, four doors, and sporty overall appearance.

Sorry, but that 2GC loses by a country mile. It looks more like an Asian sub-compact but it's even uglier. The CLA looks like it's a few classes above it, inside and out. The interior is a bit busy with so much piano gloss, but it's still much more attractive than the boring interior of the 2.

The MB CLA benefits greatly from the 'trickle down' effect for the E class car. It offers much of what the more expensive E class offers in style and technology but in a more compact scale.
The BMW 2 series may sell a bit more that the CLA but they are both clear strong competitors to each other.

Mercedes for me. Side profile of the 2 is unimpressive as well as its interior. Plus, I refer the slightly larger dimensions of the CLA.

The Mercedes does a better job of making their car look more like its siblings. Save for the twin kidney, this BMW could be almost anything. The A-Class would be a more direct competitor and likely have more back seat room.
Honestly, the Civic Si outdoes either for about half the price.

Think carefully before you shell out for what is basically a clown car. These compact/sub-compact cars and their counterpart CUV's are terribly small. Check out the normal size versions when you shop so you know what you are giving up.

I'll take the CLA without even thinking twice. I'd rather have the Renault Megane on steroids than the darty Mini platform on steroids.

I would say the winner is the 3 series... er I mean the C class... I don't like either one!

I believe - for the first time - Cadillac has the clear winner in the segment in its CT4 - which is Rear wheel drive - THe platform is the Alpha2 which is still really good - and is a little larger than these two cars - and starts out about 10% less expensive. I am not saying it will sell better than they do - but I believe it is better than either.

The Mercedes is a shared platform with Renault and uses some Renault engines as well. The Bmw uses the CLAR Platform shared with the Mini and Toyota - is also a FWD platform. Both of these cars are really tiny - the rear seats are packge shelves - many older children don't fit there.

Alpha 2 = Alpha 1

Actually - the new Alpha 2 platform is a re-engineering of the Alpha One using more high strength steel to reduce overall weight by 200 pounds - but to otherwise meet or beat all the Dynamic specs of the Alpha One.

When will people understand that the CLA and now the 2GC are niche cars? They are not meant to be accommodating Especially the CLA. Which is why there is now an A-sedan

What is the future of sedans period? Seems demand for them decreases every year.
