Lotus Considers Reviving Elan As A Boxster Competitor

Lotus is considering reintroducing the Elan name on a new drop-top sports car, as well as other models in a back catalogue that includes the Elite, the Europa and the Esprit.

The Elan name is said by sources at the Hethel-based firm to have a strong possibility of being revived in the next few years. Few of the details are known at this stage but insiders are said to be “very excited” by the proposed configuration of this car, which is expected to be positioned above the Elise as a two-seat convertible with more refinement, space and creature comforts to take on the Porsche Boxster. Despite this, the new car should stick to the classic Lotus traits of being lighter than rivals and among the best in its class to drive.

Lotus is considering an entry in the sports car niche market which is already bulging with competent participants. They will have a steep grade to climb with a fresh and unique vehicle if they want to be successful.

Lotus needs something AFFORDABLE that will sell really well and re-establish the name. Lotus is such a boutique manufacturer that they are now not given much of a second thought.

Either that or Lotus and TVR could collaborate. The Griffith is actually cutting edge in its design and could easily be reskinned as a Lotus Elan. Lotus could do an "MR2" that TVR could throw a 2.3 Ecoboost into as a Grantura or use the Thunder name that was kicked around. Both brands get two cars.

Lotus should be designing small & midsize, low-slung SUV's & lifted 5-door wagons. Have they been napping for the past 10 years?
