No Replacement For Displacement Still Applies - Musk Announces Bigger Batteries For Plaid Performance Models

Tesla CEO Elon Musk just confirmed that the Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid too) will both sport a bigger battery pack than the biggest currently offered in Tesla's lineup.

This is not an unexpected announcement though. With all the power on tap for the Plaid versions of both of these Teslas, it was assumed more battery capacity would be added into the mix too.

Bigger Batteries = Bigger Fires?

I have to laugh everytime I see a photo of a Model S "plaid".

Its like going to 'tuner night' in your town and seeing a 19 year old guy's tricked out, 5 year old BMW or Infiniti.

Will the "Plaid" go on sale before the Model S and X are cancelled because sales are dwindling?

Nothing else to add, you nailed it. Well done, sir.

How many Model 3 fires have their been ever? 2? Those are the batteries these are going to use. For the same weight, you're looking at 110 or 120 kWh pack and a 50% improvement in total output. I don't think any other manufacturers are going to be laughing when there is a Model S with 450 miles of range, a 0-60 in 2.2 or 2.3 seconds, and a 7:05 ring time. Have fun with that Porsche.

Not sure what that has to do with the Plaid S.

Thing is battery density is gradually improving, both volumetric and gravimetric, so from the same size and weight cells we get better capacity and power. It makes sense to use the latest technology to get the highest performance.

He's a "my battery is bigger than your battery" kind of guy.

Funny how Telsa is ditching the supposedly superior Panasonic batteries for CATL batteries for cars produced in its new plant.

In the last week there was an article in the Wall Street Journal indicating that the Chinese government had forced numerous auto manufacturers to use CATL. And even turn over their technology to them. The article referenced Daimler inferring their stuff was junk initially and after several years of coerced business and IP theft, it's now decent. I guess that's a model for many Chinese companies.

Tesla owns the chemistry of the cells, doesn't really matter who makes them as long as they keep the exact same formula. I think it's a smart move to prevent one supplier from raising prices. Eventually they'll be making their own cells and possibly even mining raw materials themselves. Vertical integration to the max.
