BMW's i4 to Hit The Tesla Model 3 Performance With A 520+ HP Sledge Hammer
The new model, due to go into production in 2021 following the forthcoming iX3, will be the German firm’s first electric saloon. Along with the regular 4 Series, the new EV was previewed by the bold 4 Series Gran Coupe concept at the Frankfurt motor show. BMW claims the i4 “heralds a new era of driving pleasure”, and will feature the firm’s “hallmark brand driving pleasure in a particularly concentrated form.”

So, entry level cars will get 300hp, mid level cars get 500hp and top models get 1,000hp. I am not sure that people are thinking things all the way through. Soccer Mom's don't need a motor that is equal in power to race engines to go to the mall with the kids.

I'll believe it when the car is on the market and it delivers on the promises but 520hp and 370 miles of range is pretty amazing.

Don't worry, the 500 hp version will not be the base model and it will still be slower than the Model 3 or Model Y based on BMW's own numbers.

As for 370 miles of range, if they are going by the European figures that is more like 330 miles EPA. It would be extremely impressive in a car that size. The Model 3 has 322 miles and Model Y will be about 300 miles.

Get the design right, or at least be more interesting than boring Tesla

Spoiler alert -

All these manufacturers (Porsche, BMW, Ford/Mustang) are dumping development money into rolling out EV's that are all by measures, will probably end up being better products than Tesla's offerings.

However, I suspect that the SIZE of the EV marketplace on the luxury side is basically the size that Tesla is selling in now (about 1% of the total vehicle market in US). The rub is that all these new offerings will go after the same customers and none of them will sell many units (basically dividing up the Model 3's volume since it has the luxury price-point market to itself for now).

Unless Tesla rolls out a new mass-market vehicle, the Model 3 is going to begin to show its age and its sales will go the the 'new kids on the block'.

The S is ancient and desperately in need of a full replacement--hopefully that does not look like a 125% sized Fusion.

The X is horrible, ungainly, and foolish and needs to be replaced ASAP by something more along the lines of the BMW X7.

I think every auto manufacturers have realized that eventually ALL sales will be EVs. There is zero evidence that EV sales are plateauing, quite the opposite.

I have put down a $500 (refundable) deposit on a Mach-E GT ('Infinite Blue Metallic Tinted Clearcoat' - fully refundable and unlike Tesla, I have no concerns about getting my money back if I change my mind).

I wasn't really following the EV Mustang development but I am quite excited about the product.
