Tesla's Cybertruck Is Rockin' And Rollin' — 200K Preorders Placed!

Just days after hosting a bumpy reveal event, Tesla secured 187,000 preorders of its new electric pickup truck, CEO Elon Musk tweeted Sunday. A day earlier, the Palo Alto-based automaker hit 146,000 preorders within the truck's first 48 hours.

In order to preorder the much-buzzed-about Cybertruck, customers had to drop a $100 refundable deposit, according to
the company's website. In the tweet, Musk seems to have conflated pre-orders with "orders..."

That's pretty amazing considering the extremely polarizing reaction to the truck.

The Mustang Mach-E has to have more orders than this. Right?

Nearly half of Autospies are about the Tesla cybertrash. It is probably more than half if I go back to last Thursday. Why don't you just officially become another Teslarati.com site. Your frothy uncritical support of Tesla is unlike your coverage of any other brand.

If nothing else, EM, has gotten millions in free press for his company. I hate Tesla products, none are beautiful in comparison to the field of cars/suvs that are available. But I have to respect the marketing savvy of the people in charge.. and for all the opinions about the FUGLY CT... well beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. there are plenty of people that want a sub 60K that is completely different.. so nich unit, not a big seller, because there is not a chance in hell that Tesla can make a profit on a stainless steel with bullet proof glass truck for the price they are talking... material cost is too high and they know it.

There are significant cost benefits to the design. Instead of a body on frame, the body IS the frame, it's an exoskeleton which should make it stronger but also cut the number of parts in half. Stainless steel is cheap, oh and it doesn't have to be painted. The whole paint shop process is completely gone from this car.

At first I was a bit skeptical of the base version costing as much as a base Model 3, but if they can greatly simplify manufacturing then I can see them hitting these numbers.

Also, I just read there is no stamping at all. The metal is laser cut and folded. That is another very expensive and time consuming process that gets to be skipped.

An "exoskeleton" will fail a crash test. And how do they plan to "fold" stainless steel.
And if there is no paint shop, why Econ showing painted versions? Are they using spray cans in the tent?

You score the sheet of steel and bend it. That's how the prototype was built apparently.

They never showed a painted version, the camper one has a weird color but I think that is sunset/sunrise lighting. The color variants will be wraps or perhaps they will coat the steel with something for ultra premium colors.

At $100 per pre-order deposit, that’s about $20 million so far — although Tesla says that money is fully refundable for prospective customers.

It's meaningless. Deposit is only $100 and refundable.
